I got this box car with a batch recently and noticed this slot in the roof??? after I popped of the body I found this curious rubber band setup
It would appear there was a ruberr band between the posts and I surmise it had something attached to it and projecting through the roof. It probably moved back and forth as the train ran. There is no name on it, but I suspect it may be a LIONEL. Have any of you guys seen or owned one of these?

That's the rarer version of Tyco's walking brakeman boxcar. Worth at least $30 if all the steps are on it.
Made 1960-64, if you go to Tony Cook's Red Box Tyco page you can find the details on it.
It also came in M&StL red, the same scheme everybody offered in that period, which is a little more common.

Yes, that is one COOL car! You got a nice "chat about " piece if nothing else. It's a fun car, and hard to find. I have heard about them, but haven't found one yet. Thanks for sharing, and the pictures!

It is the Animated Brakeman car and what your missing is the brakeman that circles around on top in that slot. Here are mine:

Listed correctly, it would bring a lot of bids, they're not easy to find.
Rubber bands from the axles turn shafts which turned another rubber band on which the brakeman rode.

Some nice photos showing the figure on top of the car. Could substitute an animal figure for those who prefer.
