Hi, folks. I've been reading this forum for some months. I'm not a collector, as such, but the equipment I prefer for my model railroading is the stuff of this forum. The kind of model railroading that I like to do was the state of the art long ago, but no more so I like to start with old, used equipment and modify it to look good at normal viewing distances.

Much of the new stuff is nicer than any model I could make or even improve, but I like the tinkering and I prefer to start with something less intimidating in price. Cutting, drilling and painting on a $400 masterpiece would feel a bit like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa.

Much of my equipment is Mantua, which was marketed as Tyco when I got my start back in the 1970's so Mantua and Tyco are closely linked concepts in my mind. I notice, though, that this forum is not only about Tyco, so brand does not matter as much as the use and care of old model trains.

I can learn much, here, and maybe occasionally chip in a thought or two.

Welcome! I've learned quite a bit and helped others. I love this forum as other here enjoys classic, vintage and modern HO such as me and making custom and kit bashed creations and no DCC or rivet counters in sight.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome?

Glenn your mention of having fun reminds me of something I just read. In a recent issue of Model Railroader, Neil Besougloff wrote a column about the twenty inch layout. For antique car enthusiasts, a car that looks perfect from 20 feet away is called a 20 footer. Neil extended that thought to models that look right from 20 inches. The best models look great from really close up, but that's the $400 difference.

Anyway, one of the marks of the 20 inch layout is that the owner is having fun. I consider my layout a 20 incher.

Justin, does the latest edit suffice to keep out the hackers?

Not quite. The whole "it's opposite line" should be deleted. Not being the anal guy here! I do remember a recent Model Railroader in the editor's letter, he spoke of 20 incher layouts compared to 20 footer classic cars.

Don,
Sounds like you found your place with models as I too share a common interest in your modeling....I too like to take the older "Non-model" trains and make them into much the same as you....Sadly, in some cases, I get carried away with it......and they turn into serious detailed models......

Hope to see some of yours and your ideas on things posted within the forums!

ENJOY!

Hey Don! Sorry to hear you had trouble joining. From what you described in your first post it sounds like there may have been an error with the wording of the question/accepted answer. It might be helpful to other potential members to bring that to the admins attention! I may check that out myself... (Edit: I just tried to create a new account, and you're right, the anti-spam answer is incorrect. I'll message Todd. Thanks for pointing this out!)

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Tyco Forum!

Don:

Same here. I've modeled in S scale for over forty years, and have done my share of "super" detailing, but when I visualize my Tyco 4-8-0 at the head end of a complimentary stock cars (imaginary), I do not see a super detailed engine, etc., only a realistic train without all the bells and whistles. It's got me thinking about my modeling objectives.

That was one of my problems when I tried to register, too. I finally typed "ocyt" as it was presented to get past it.

Welcome to the site. the only rule in modl railroading is to have fun. Nothing else matters.
If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right.
