Hello, Tyco forum - after umpteen tries, I finally figured out what I had to do to join. 've been reading this forum for some time. My interest in Mantua/Tyco goes back to this past summer when my wandering keyboard fingers got me involved with a J.W.Bowker 2-4-0 from ebay. It needed a drive shaft, which I fabricated by threading the nail from a pop rivet and sliding it in a brass tube and locking a nut on each end.

I then began reading forums about Mantua/Tyco engines and my mind went back to 1960 when I purchased an 0-4-0 Booster train set. That was followed by a General 4-4-0 and a 2-car 1860's passenger train and a few 1860 freight cars. All are long gone, now, of course, but I began to think about what I could have done with them. Next from Ebay was a 4-6-0, and then a 4-8-0, which I have tuned and made into great performers. Today, I received a three car set of 1860 passenger cars, and now my fewrtile mind is turning over at acquiring anothe 4-4-0 General (or two).

I have a layout in mind, based on a five mile brickyard spur that ran behind my boyhood home. Whether it gets built or not is subject to future events, since I have been modeling in S scale for over forty years.

Anyway, these little locomotives have breathed new life into my modeling activity, and I'm enjoying the diversion, even if that's all the further it goes. At the very least, I am developing a new respect for Mantua/Tyco.

Glad you've joined us here in Tycoland, RB. There's always room for more trains, scales, and fun, never limit yourself to a small part of the lifestyle. I have N, TT, HO, 0-27, G (and a wee bit of S myself), HO being my primary interest these days. I have everything from Marx wind-ups to a few "modern" HO engines with decoders. Glad you're aboard, and hope to hear more about your fantasy HO railroad. Nothing wrong with imagining, dreaming, and some scheming, to do a different type of railroading.

More on my early experience with Mantua/HO around 1960. After purchasing the General 4-4-0 and the 1860 passenger and freight cars, I toyed briefly with the idea of modeling "old time" railroading (as it was known in those days). Since I was new and inexperienced, I didn't take long to get back into contemporary railroading (little did I realize that would be "old time" or "period" railroading, today)

Over the years, I have written articles of model railroad possibilities using readily available S scale equipment, of which, at least in the early years, was virtually non-existent. During that time, I also built five brass locomotive "kits" (loose terminology), and settled on a secondary Class I main line that would use those locomotives to move a limited number of freight trains.

That was a great idea, but soon expanded beyond the original limits as more and better models became available, and I found my secondary main line getting severely overpopulated. This past spring, I sold off several locomotives to make more room in my engine terminals for off-duty locomotives. It now has a more balanced locomotive and rolling stock roster, and I should be happy, right?

Well, at least for the time being, I am still adding to it and the industrial base with a few more Ebay purchases, but those Mantua Generals are exerting a pretty strong pull right now, and I have envisioned and sketched several layout plans using those locomotives as star performers. At this point, I'm having a struggle figuring which way to go.

Stay tuned
