Hi I have an older 2-8-0 chattanooga that has a loud squealing sound as it goes around the track. I took it apart and oiled it and that maybe made it a little quieter but not much. now here is the thing i find odd. if I run it around the track full throttle (which seems slower than I expected) some times after about 4 times around it stops making any squealing sound and purrs like a kitten it also speeds up almost twice as fast as it was running. but if for any reason it stops like jumping off track or you slow it down to slow it starts squealing again and will repeat the above process. I have ran it around 20 times though and never had it stop making noise. any ideas what to do to make it stop squealing? I have oiled everything I could think of. thanks

thrawn,
Sounds like you might have a worn motor bearing OR the pilot truck, or one of the 2 end wheelsets on the tender are squealing.....Try alittle oil on the free rolling wheels to see if that might be the issue, The motor is a whole other story.....

Any oil or grease on the end of the motor shaft that you can see?

BTW, this is your first posting to the forum, WELCOME ABOARD!

Thx for the help. I do think the problem lies in the motor since I can spin it and get a squeal (i guess the drive wheels are turning too though) I did oil the motor and wheels and gears. I did not find any grease or oil on the motor looks like it has set for some time. what gets me is how some times it runs quiet and good but if it gets stopped even fro a fraction of a second the squeal is back

thrawn,
Try taking your finger, get a little bit of grease, NOT oil on it, and rub is gently across where the shaft is on the other side of the motor away from the really small idler gear....THEN, add just a touch to the idler gear, be sure to get some BEHIND the gear!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds to be as you got no lube in there, causing it to squeal. Test it, see if that helps, if not you need a new bearing, then it be better to replace the whole motor, which I may be able to help you with!!!

I would recommend White Lithium Grease, has always worked well, BUT be sure to make sure its plastic compatible!!!!

That's most likely your problem. I usually solve it with a small drop of Labelle 108, but John probably knows better than me,

Cheez,
I don't always know best, BUT I have found the use of oil, over done, and with TYCO on the side of the motor brushes to much oil will get on the comutator plate, and cause smoking and possible heat issues and turns out to "burn" the copper plates enough to ruin the motor, grease in a very small amount is more difficult to get onto the plates inside the motor even after heated from running.

Forgot to mention one "KEY" thing to remember here... A LITTLE goes ALONG ways!

In this case, less is more!

Your reasoning definitely makes sense. Whenever I'm lubing an engine my thinking is basically plastic parts = grease, metal parts = oil. In a case like this though I supose it could go either way

Yes, but, it also depends on the application of the oil vs the grease too......tight places, with a lot of plastic, grease is best, that is plastic compatable then the use of oil that can "run" into unwanted places.....specially around motor brushes and such as that will ruin a motor if it gets on the brushes and or the motors commutator plates.

But yes it could go either way, just something to remember around these areas of the motor, less is more a little goes a long ways!

sorry about the delay I had a crazy weekend! anyway I got some super lube saturday and took the tender a part. I put a little on the axles and on and behind the gears. I wiped off any excess and put it back together. I ran it and it got a lot quieter. it may stop making noise all together but right now i don't have much track to run it on. only about 3 feet forward then 3 feet backwards. I am resoldering and redoing the layout. but i think it had help already Thanks for the tips and I will let you know how it runs when i get to try it around the track a few times.
