Has anyone else noticed two different style corner steps on Tyco's operating hoppers? Anyone know when or why?

Glenn, Would that happen to be "that" corner only? OR is the different stirrups on all 4 corners?
I don't know, as I have never noticed that before, BUT, a question, the 2 cars pictured, one mantua one TYCO? AND do they have the same road number?
Interesting find, good eye for detail you got!

The one on the right is no doubt a later revision to reinforce the stirrups.

Nelson, Not a bad thought on that, but I would have thought out on the main corner would have been a better place.....But better somewhere then not at all!

| As a student of GIC, if you look on his web site, he first brought that up a while ago with his Monon cement hopper. That is when I noticed not only was it the cement hopper but all the hoppers.

John - I thought all the operating hoppers were Tyco. I know the truck design changed, but they could have been swapped around, so I don't assume the ones with older trucks are the older hoppers. It's all four corners and the cars have the same road number.
Nelson, Phillip - From my observations, the gusset version is newer, since I've seen it only on the Virginian and DT&I cars.

Glenn, I thought these hoppers were also made by Mantua? Yes, no?

John, After doing a tiny bit of research, my conclusion is that these cars were sold as kits under the Mantua name, and RTR under the Tyco name. I have no idea how to tell them apart, though. I'll have to check to be sure, but I don't think they have any identifying marks on them.

As I thought, there are very few things I have found that Mantua didn't do that TYCO did, whether kit form or RTR.....
I'll have to look at those, I have to see if they have any markings on them as well!

John, most of my hopper collection is in storage, but I checked the few pieces I have handy, and found markings only on the undersides of a couple of roofs; one said "Mantua" and the other said "Tyco." That really isn't any help with identifying the two Virginian hoppers though!

The gussets were added in the early 70's. The only roadnames I know to have both versions, are the ones Tyco consistently sold from the late 60's through the early 70's. So, you won't find a gussetted C&O, Reading, Navy, Brachs, or other names that were dropped early. Nor will you find a square DT&I as that was only made in the 80's.
The Virginian, Monon, and Holly can be found in either. I don't recall for sure if B&M and Spreckel's may be, but they were produced close to the right timeframe.

I have the one on the left with the box which I got for $7 a couple of years ago.
