Is anyone here interested in collecting promotional model cars like the used to give away auto dealerships, usually or most commonly in 1:24-25 scale.?

Ken, Try this link. I just won the 1958 Buick in the earlier post. I have a lot of different scales but I really like 1:24-25. I think some of the prices are more than I can bare. There is a nice Rolls promo in 1:25 scale, that is blue gray and not too expensive so far.

I never knew such things existed. Dealers used to just give these things away for free? They're slightly crude looking, but the fact that they're the same vintage as the car they're modeled after is pretty cool. If you get any more of these I wouldn't mind seeing pictures

Cheez, How's your summer going? This isn't mine but I saved the picture because a maroon four door version of this is what got me hooked on model cars as a kid . The early ones like the '58 Buick from the first post have warped over time and many early originals, I think they said made of acetate, are nearly almost all showing some signs of warpage even into the early '60s. My '58 has some mild warping and is a pretty good example. Someone has two original unbuilt '58 Buick kits, made with styrene plastic like modern models, and is asking $375 at auction right now. I'm partial to the '58 Buick also because my parents had a '58 Buick Special four door when I was younger.

Ken, I just visited this site while looking for information a couple of days ago. This is quite an impressive collection. The promos listed and shown in that site's collection of photos, would probably cost enough to get a nice enthusiast type car, say a late model used Mustang convertible with a V-8. BTW: They're asking $750 buy it now for the promo of the Imperial above.

DaCheez, not "free"...you had to buy an actual car first, then they'd give you one, or your kid, for a toy. Jo-Han was one of the makers who did promo models for most auto makers, including AMC, as well as regular plastic kit models. Unfortunately,, many of these 50's and 60's suffered from poor plastic quality, they'e warp over time in heat or poor conditions. Some models are very rare and sought after today. Many had detailed undercarriages and text on them identifying the running gear parts, unlike the plastic put-together kits. And some had friction drive, other's didn't.
I have a few, mostly AMC, and some acquired in lots throught Ebay of other brands. I'd LOVE to find a Gremlin promo, but they are very rare and cost more than $100 if you can find one. Same with Javelin and AMX models. Earlier AMCs like the mid-60s and late 50's Ramblers, wagons, you can find fairly cheap ( $20 sometimes ). Pacers are another expensive version to locate.
So, yes, I do collect a few, and have a few. But not really deep into my pocketbook.

My summer is going good, just getting in to my summer projects
Ahh the joys of antique plastics. They're still neat relics...expensive ones! I find cars of the 50's and 60's much more visually appealing than modern day automobiles. That's a nice looking Buick. When my mom was growing up my grandpa had a 57 BelAir...man do I wish that car was still in the family

Gotchya. So it wasn't like you could just walk in to every dealer in town and say "I'm considering buying one of your cars, may I have a model of it?" That would've been to easy Still, a neat idea

Cheez, I did read this week in a comment that accompanied the "flicker collection" mentioned in the link, an earlier post that dealers would give a car to a kid who's family was considering buying the actual car. Also I saw coupons that could be used to buy promos in the same "flicker collection" comment. Check out these links

I'm also pretty sure you could find some promos with friction motors at the local "5 and 10 cent store" in the sixties. I had a couple of promos, one a maroon '66 Impala, and we never had that actual auto. I wish I still had it and knew what happened to it. I'm also really interested in the vintage 50's, 60's, and 70's cars too.

My original 1958 Buick Roadmaster arrived yesterday. I never thought I'd get one but they are pretty common. It's a good example even though many or most promo models of that era have warping of the body present. I discovered it was missing a headlight lense, something that I missed in the pictures and the seller forgot to mention. The steering wheel is complete and intact and the seats each have a kind of flocking that later promos don't have. The front fender chrome trims are each missing a part. Behind the '58 is a '66 Buick Wildcat like one I had a long time ago. I built this one recently to look like a promo as much as possible. I don't think there was a' 66 promo just the '65 Buick. The side and corner of the front bumper on the "65 turns up and that was flattened out for '66. It looks like the mint with box '65 Buicks can go for hundreds of dollars.

They're perfect examples. I have the same '66 T-bird but it has the Philco radio instead of the regular interior and friction drive.

Here's a picture of another auction where the promo chassis has a price tag on it demonstrating that promos could be also purchased at retail outlets. I remember seeing other promo cars at a 5 & 10 cent store. This price in 1958, 79 cents.
