Hello:
Read over at the Ask The Bach-Man site that new pictures of the coming GP-38-2 HO-scale model will be posted over this weekend. This is looking to be a nice entry level model. I've already seen many of the mail order dealers are listing the coming GP-38-2 and SD-40-2 models in the mid-$20 range for non-DCC. Can't beat that price and from the previously posted images of the pre-production GP-38-2, it looks like it'll be a nicely done model.
You can view the pictures by going to the www.bachmanntrains.com site and then entering the Ask The Bach-Man section and then on into the Photo Gallery. The Bach-Man stated in a post that he'd have new pictures of the model up maybe this weekend.

Hey,
The new Bachmann HO-Scale GP-38-2 will be available Fall 2006 and will be initially offered dressed for Santa Fe (Freight Warbonnet); Delaware & Hudson; Norfolk Southern, Chessie System; CP Rail; and CSX (Bright Future). The model will be sold two ways: analog DC retailing for $45 or DCC equipped for only $65 retail. Considering Bachmann stuff generally gets a good discount many places, these will certainly be economical and nice pieces. Sure they don't match the level of detail that you get with Atlas Master Series, Athearn Genesis, or Life-Like Proto 2000...but they also are a good $100 cheaper!
Here's a recent picture Bachmann provided of the pre-production model:

I would guess Bachmann will have pictures of the decorated shells around September/October and the models should be available no later than Christmas '06.

Here's a look at a decorated, Chessie System, new Bachmann GP-38-2...

Paint job looks nice. The fuel tank and trucks leave me wondering. Fuel Tank seems a big large for a GP-38-2...hmmmm

alexander13,
The Bachmann Standard line, with or without EZ-DCC decoder, GP-38-2 have not hit the streets...or I guess I should say the rails...yet here in the U.S.
Bachmann was calling for Late Oct 2006 delivery for this GP-38-2 and the new SD-40-2 models...however I think we are now talking a firm delivery by December '06.
Once they arrive, I'll post my thoughts on their performance and look. However, I can tell you that I would assume the drive is the same as what is currently riding in the Bachmann Standard GP-30; GP-35; and GP-40 models. And it is all-wheel electrical pickup and though maybe not flywheel equipped, it is a solid pulling and smooth running from my experience with them.

Thats some nice piant for Bachmann! On a serious model note I model the Chessie System and most people wouldnt look twice at the new model because Chessie System never had any dash 2 GP-38`s. But some backdating to the shell and you would have a fine strait line 38 model. The fuel tank is the correct size and the horns look like they need to be moved forward a bit. The trucks are correct for Chessie System GP-38`s since they are Bloomberg B`s ( they used mostly trade in trucks from scaped first generation geeps`s). The SD40-2 they are doing are dead on for a Chessie System and it makes me wonder why they didnt paint that one in Chessie System instead?
From looking closer at the GP-38-2 it also appears to have an anti-climber. This model would be dead on for a Family Lines System or even a Seaboard System , L&N too , I think most of those have extended range tanks as well. Where I work in Pensacola FL for CSX they only service them once a week and the units stay running 24 hrs a day. Im guessing they have 3,000 gal. or maybe 3500gal. tanks!
