Digging through some basement boxes, I found this one in a bin of heavy duty underframe flatcars, the other two were Bachmanns I think. This is a Cox, and I don't believe the trailer goes with it, the pin won't fit in the hole up front, so I just scooted it forward to lay flat. A nice piece.

Nice car, although I have to say the roller bearing trucks look out of place.

EM-1: Beautiful car! Now tell me, what type trucks fit on that??? I bought a couple of cars just like that one at a train show a few years back, just repainted and decaled them.....BUT of course they came without trucks. Nothing I have in my parts box comes close to attaching to the bottom. I'd search ebay for them if I knew what to look for. Help?

Jerry,
Thanks! To give you some insight on that B&O car of mine.
It happens to be a MDC Roundhouse, 85 foot "Palace" Combination car. I got mine without trucks, and box, I just knew what it was.......I will be using old Central Valley sprung and equalized passenger car "Commonwealth" 6 wheeled trucks under it...They look really close to those used, under Athearn heavy weight cars, only, not plastic! BUT those would be a good retro fitted truck for under the Palace cars like that I have pictured here......BUT, would take alittle work to make them fit......

I think I actually have a set of the proper trucks for under this car, I'll have to look and make sure to be 100% sure but, I do believe I have atleast one set of proper MDC Roundhouse trucks to be a bolt on fit!

Ken,
I must say, I love the G&D cars.....(I don't have any of my own at this time), BUT, I will! I do have to say, I'd change those Barber 70-ton roller bearing trucks to archbar......would better suit the era of the car!

Ben,
I must add, that that Oscar Meyer car has to be the best detailed, and paint I have EVER seen! I love the "added" hot dogs to the emblem on the right side of that car, I don't think the ones, I have had, had that decal! (Mine were Life-Like) I never had the TYCO version!

Yeah.....I will be keeping my eyes out on one of the TYCO versions.......As I have 3 or 4 of the Life-Like versions, (I think) as I may have sold a few of them and I know I have over the years just because I had so many with the same road number.......I just never had a chance to get one from TYCO so.......BUT, that's about to change!

Thanks EM-1! At least I know what to look for now. I wonder what the deal is that these things are floating around minus trucks? In addition to being truckless, mine were also basket cases, someone had turned them into MOW cars....in not in a good way either....so I did a full restoration, with new 'palace car' decals and everything. Came out far better than I hoped, so I want to finish the job. I DO have a spare set of the Athearn heavyweight trucks in the parts box, I'll give some thought to engineering a way to fit them. Thanks again!

Jerry,
Call me John! As for the trucks, I do in fact have an extra set of the type to be used on the MDC Palace cars!

As for the car I pictured, its factory, sloppy assembly to the underside of the car, (Which I plan to restore) but, the rest isn't to bad......I'd like to find a few more of them to have yet another B&O "Passenger" set, of a different car type! Even, if its a shorter version!

As for the thanks, your more then welcome! Anytime.....

* What has everyone else done to make the coupling system MDC devised for the Pullman Palace passenger cars work. I have never gotten it to work right in reverse as MDC says to make them. The best I've done is place pins into the floor of the car that keep the plastic spring in place, in reference to the car body, with the truck mounted. This works on wider radius curves. When in reverse, the cars go through tight radius turns ( 15" R) or switch frogs I experience derailments.
* Three items make up the coupler system not counting the coupler itself. The coupler arm moves separate from the truck and car body. The plastic spring also moves separate from the truck, and car body, but turns with the coupler arm. This does nothing to make the coupler arm return to center, or control the coupler arm when pushed in reverse. So in reverse it does nothing, and adds to derailments. When pulled in forward this spring does nothing. The car runs OK with no derailments because it is being pulled, and not pushed.
* So my pin setup allows me to run, pushed in reverse, train sets, as long as they run on the main line with #6 being the smallest switch. I have to go very slow in reverse through yard ladders.
* Now I have another problem with these cars. I have gotten most of these cars at train shows and from other persons collections in the last 15 years. In the undecorated unbuilt kits a lot of those springs are missing, along with other parts. I have to make a coupler arm return system to allow the cars to run in reverse. I made the arms with coupler boxes attached. I have posted info and step by step photos here already. I used a system like the Athearn RDC and their steel wire return.
* So if anyone has found another way to make these Palace cars run in reverse maybe you can post something about it, and share it.
frank

Frank,
I have to agree. I too have not made anything on my Palace cars as of yet...BUT, I have done much the same thing that you have pictured here for my old AHM cars! I made coupler draft gear "swing-arms" that were/are 9 HO scale feet long, that glue hard to the truck frames, as they are glued to the truck frames, backwards, (opposite end of the truck frames due to the nature of the truck frames as they can be mounted to the car floor 2 ways.) I remove the talgo draft gear box, for the X2F couplers, reverse the trucks and mount the new "swing-Arm" to the other side of the trucks frame, to them mount the draft gear box from Kadee to allow it to swing in operation. push or pull mode.

To this point, it all works pretty well! Once I get through all my boxes in the shop, and have a chance I'll snap a picture of what I have done as I explained here, to give you guys an idea of this on what I'll probably do on my MDC Palace car.....

John ; Did you go back and see the set of Pullman palace car I have. they are done for the Lehigh Valley and the Black Diamond train set. I have some 4-6-2 camelbacks done up in LV to pull them. The Mantua 4-6-2 camelback is a model of the Lehigh Valley's first pacific types. They were camelbacks.

Frank,
No I didn't go back, I'm not sure, where you might have posted them!

I want to try and get my hands on at least ONE Camelback cab from Mantua as I'd LOVE to mold it and then to mold the firebox sides as well, along with the rear "porch roof" that over-hangs the tender......
