Back in the 1950's, an experiment between steam and diesel was being performed - The Stiesel engine see picture below

LOL! Wonder when it was last serviced or using some rather high sulfur diesel fuel!

No, it's just an ALCO.
(former Morristown and Erie, C430, by the way).

Technically, since diesel passenger engines produced steam for heating, aren't they technically all Stiesels, too? just don't use it for driving power.

That's bad........BUT ALCO was "known" for blowing smoke..........Also a "Burbling" diesel as well.......

Back in the 80's I've seen a few old U-Boats do that, And old MP U30B was even throwing sparks out of the turbo. The crew used it like it was Ok.

I had a train pass me with a C30-7 that left a huge cloud of oily smoke behind. It made the plume in that photo look tiny.
Later I read in a rail magazine the engine had been retired with a blown motor.

From my "diesel" knowledge, when one is blowing smoke, its running to rich on diesel. HOWEVER that also depends on the turbo as well, as if the roots blower (which back then a lot used and are still in service today) were known for running rich on the diesel/air mixture......
Now, if you got a diesel blowing smoke, and sparks out the exhaust that's a whole other story......The blower is overheating and your running it one notch on the throttle to much its not made for that type of RPM's, (NOT the diesel. the turbo feeding the diesel!) This is the most likely cause of a spark spewing exhaust stack.......Which will burn the sides of the hood black, even scorch them!
Once the turbo hits a certain RPM, trying to keep up with the diesels RPM 's to continue to "feed" it, it will overheat from to many RPM's, this in turn once it crosses that line, the diesel is hitting to many RPM's on the crank, and will more then likely need a complete overhaul, possibly even re-sleaved. As that's pushing the limits on a diesel, having to run at what would be said as HI RPM's for a diesel......
IF taking into consideration, these older diesels used to idle at say 400 RPM's.......Some, even less then that!
