After almost 50 years, Hornby-Rivarossi has finally announced a completely retooled version of their U25C, coming right on the heels of Korean Brass' announcement they will also be producing one in plastic (tho they may reconsider that after Rivarossi's announcement). After years spent wandering in the wilderness, U25C fans can hope to enjoy an embarrassment of riches.

Here's links to the release news, then the text.

Hornby International is pleased to announce the upcoming release of the all new Rivarossi General Electric U25C HO scale diesel locomotive.

In the 1960s, Rivarossi set the bar high for HO diesel locomotive models with its release of the U25C. The detail and quality was well ahead of its time. Now after 47 years Rivarossi has decided to reset that bar announcing the all new Rivarossi model of the General Electric U25C. This new model of the U25C has been licensed by and developed with full co-operation of General Electric. This new release will incorporate all new state-of-the art tooling with the following features:

Heavy metal die-cast chassis

5 pole can motor with flywheels

NMRA RP-25 wheel profile

Knuckle couplers

Authentic roadnames, lettering and road numbers

Locomotives will come with road specific detailing and lighting configurations

Separately applied detail parts: horns, bell, handrails, grab irons and snowplows (if appropriate)

DCC/Ready and DCC/Sound equipped versions

Initial releases due early second quarter 2014

Initial roadnames will include Northern Pacific; Pennsylvania; Chicago, Burlington & Quincy; and Atlantic Coast Line in multiple road numbers.

As the first new project by Rivarossi for the US market this locomotive marks a milestone for Rivarossi under the ownership of the Hornby Group. Hornby America is excited by the commitment shown by Hornby International to the American market and we look forward to expanding our presence in the U.S. with continuous improvements and new offerings to the venerable Rivarossi brand of model railroad equipment.

Hornby America, a subsidiary of the Hornby Group, is the official importer of the Rivarossi line and welcomes dealer inquiries.

Wow! Never saw that one coming. My favorite U25Cs where the group purchased new for the Oroville Dam project.

I wonder if the Krauss Maffei is next.

There was a guy in New Zealand who repowered two of the old ones and painted and detailed them for the Oroville Dam project. He showed how he did it on his website, but it appears to be gone now. It was the inspiration for my can motor & belt drive repower of one of my units.

This is a gallery of GE builder's photos of them from the 60's.

A modern version of the Kross Muffy would be great!
