I, some day, want to have my own version of a junk yard for us HO train guys. I would sell parts for flat rates and what not. I figured if I could get enough clunkers and sell piece by piece, sell whole engines too good for the torch, and maybe sell clunkers for projects and parts engines. I'm thinking if I started this up, I would advertise in all the big train magazines and online. I would take pictures of the engines as they come in and have the website designed to where a brand and make and model could be found and a message with picture and part needed. What's some other idea's? I get tired of asking and searching parts as others do to. What y'all's opinion?

My opinion is that I would buy from you if you started that! You would need a steady supply of junk locos though.

hey that'd make a neat scene on a layout Get a few junker locos fade & rust them & put them in the scrap yard with loco parts & do what the Preservation Socities did They'd spray paint the locos that were to be saved

Sounds fine. Getting your name out there will help tremendously. There is a guy that's a regular at a local train show. He says that people in his area know he buys and sells model trains. They give him leads on who's got trains for sale or if they spot an estate sale with trains, they'll notify him.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I would run a ad in MRR and RMC saying something along the lines like Cash 4 Clunkers, any and all HO engines in fair to poor shape, engine missing parts, doesn't run due to serious malfunction and or too old or junky to fix up. I see lots of lots on eBay that would fit the bill.

My concern is that shipping costs make such a busienss un-sustainable. All the hype about the post office's issues, and yet it still costs a pretty penny to ship a little locomotive shell across a state line.
You'd need either budget shipping, or a carrier pigeon to make it work out. But if it did, that'd be real neat.

I have been doing this......sort of. back in 2008, I was in Model Railroader... Reason I am not now? $1,200 for 6 months is a bit steep! BUT, I also had "YTR" going as well. (I have always kind of "Salvaged" parts, steam diesel, electrics, rolling stock buildings etc....But the advertisement is the killer, if your not making enough to cover it, its to much to put out and not get back so after 6 months, I had to let up as I didn't even break even on the cost! I lost $100 or so in that.
Justin, all I can say is do your ads online, first, start off on a website and build it that way then, when your making enough, then put ads in the magazines! And since then, 2008, I bet MR's cost has gone up due to the rise in gas prices as the ink as I have heard, is Petroleum based! So......
I have to say, I'm doing much better with a website then I ever did from MR! 2 years of a website cost me $250.00 a MUCH site better then $1,200, for 6 months!

Many have tried to, and failed, ya just can't repair stupid...
