Guys,
While I've been healing......Drving me crazy that I can't work in the shop....BUT, I can work a computer mouse pretty good left-handed, so been working on the shop computer with autoCAD so.....

This:

Is what I plan to custom build when I'm able.......

Question is.......What would be a "Good" EMD destination for such a set of beasts????

An EMD DDBB-30? OR, A EMD BBA-30?

O.O whoa. That would be awesome. Though IMO the GP30's classic lines are ruined by the high short hood, so that would be my only change. But I can appreciate how imposing the high hood is...

looks like a EMD DD30XX or could go with the EMD C1600-DD30...heck scrap the DD and call it a BB, BB is the designation for battle ships so why not...looks large enough...heck with it, it looks like an SD9 with the high hood bit so perhaps a EMD SDD9-BB or something....similar...

Guys, Thanks for the input.....I was leaning towards "BBA-30" AND BBB-30......That is 2 yes 2) units, an "A" as 7800, and a "B" as 7801!

As for those with a quick eye for detail......YES, its built off the EMD GP-30, body lines.....Which in fact, is why, I done that drawing as I did.....I also have "DD-30" version too, with actual "DD" type trucks.....Along with a "SD-30" version as well.......

With the "high-hood" I had too! The "B&O" type paint that the low noses got, would not look right on a locomotive that big. BUT I do have a "Low-Hood" version too!

Could you guys see it ok tho? As my picture site loaded it that way! Opened in IE, or paint, shows it pretty well tho!

To make a model of that in HO will require 6, GP-30's.... 3 per unit. I don't have the parts to make both, powered (ALL 4 trucks per unit) BUT I do have the parts to make one with all 4 trucks, powered! WHICH, it will have 2, 6 volt DC motors, one per truck articulation. This is to keep the motor power to 12 volt wired together, and be able to use a single DDC chip! The separate motors, will allow me to keep that "center" hood opening as is......Unlike the Athearn version of the DD-40.

Tony, you know of the B&O, in the paint that's T to add to it, that in all regards as I designed it, would have been run "long-hood" FORWARD, SO being that, and the length of the monster, I thought I'd go above and beyond regular running practice of the B&O and make it short-hood forward!

John, what exactly part wise would you possibly need to get all units powered? it would be really nice to have both powered units, also don't forget about my super steamer unit I told you about ;) muwhahaha!!!! I may have some spare units (gp30 I think) with a power truck that might be able to be sent your way, may need a slight rehab but if it would help you out I would be willing to send it!

Very nice autocad work. Sometimes the concept is satisfying enough unless you have a client or just have to have one, IMO.
I have drawn engines and Nascars in Paint but have never used autocad.
Thanks for showing this.

Jim,
Well, needless to say, the whole prject requires some specialized parts to make it happen, as I have it planned....

As you see, it has 2 sets of Blomberg trucks....THESE, will be the key feature of this model. The "outside" truck, on each end, has to be from Hobbytown of Boston............ long since out of business, but a lot of parts still exist! BUT that truck they had on there unit has a type of gear transmission and then on the other end of the truck has a drive shaft coming out of it.....This is the drive feature I need so that the whole truck articulation can articulate, BUT also have the rear most trucks, (next to the fuel tank) powered! The Hobbytown trucks, for 2 units will make this happen! I also can get away with 2 Hobbytown trucks, with the gear transmission, BUT the other truck that just gets movement from the forward truck, could be a Varney truck.

With that said, I have 2 of the Hobbytown trucks with the gear transmission.....I have multiple Varney trucks too....(I'd rather use the Hobbytown trucks) as they are solid metal...... Which will add weight, to the tractive effort of the loco, not to mention keeping the 2 trucks the same will ease assembly on the span bolster that it will require....

The frame, I'm going to completely scratch build from brass that I have in the shop for scratchbuilding.....(The fuel tank, is another story!)

As for the shells, It will take 3 GP30 shells to make one unit happen! As they have to be seriously chopped up to make them look as the CAD drawing shows!

And that, the shell to this unit, is the key......I have to make the shell first, of the unit....THEN build the frame to fit it, which won't be difficult as all once the shell to the BBA-30 is done, or merely ready for paint.

After the frame is built, then power.....I want this unit to have a separate motor, and flywheel PER truck articulation....With NO shaft connecting them! That way. the cross over "walkway" under the radiators, will be true to that of the DDA40X.....Unlike that of the old Athearn design! This to make it happen requires two, 6 volt DC motors. Flywheels, I'll turn them from brass bar stock that I have, to fit the unit.

AF,
Yeah, paint works well but Auto cad, is GREAT! really all you need is the "design" of something basic, and then take it from there.....I can also do my own lettering as well, as the pictures here. the "BALTIMORE AND OHIO" is actual B&O lettering done from actual B&O prints I have of their lettering, and AutoCAD done the rest!

I just love the looks of the GP-30, I had to see what it look like otherwise, and with me...... I love my articulated steam, I sure do, but the HUGE diesels of yesteryear, and of today catches my interest, just because of their size.....I'm a B&O modeler, with UP interests at heart! I've always been fascinated with the U50 (4 truck), not to be confused with the U50C, (2 Trucks), and the Veranda Side Turbines, and needless to say, the ALCO C-855, and then the big Centapede from Baldwin, and can't forget the DD-35/DD-40's......I simply find that 4 truck articulation extremely interesting......

Sad to say, Athearn's new U50 with the 4 trucks, and I think it was MTH in HO, with the Turbines, the rear most truck next to the fuel tank on both ends of the unit aren't powered! WELL, I'm going to redesign the wheel and make that happen!

Also AF, I have a few more to post too! All done with AutoCAD!

John - using AutoCAD left handed ( for me ) is difficult and much slower than molasses. Great work, buddy!
Use what you have as you can get creative satisfaction while healing. The wife broke her wrist in a fall last October and, after two months disability, went back to her office in January. She types and is on the phone, so it was and is yet a recovery process. Don't try to be a hero- let things heal and then you'll be back in shape by late spring!

Well, everyone...

I have been absent due to a few things, as you know I suffered a broken hand, its all but healed, going through therapy.....Not bad....

Well with the broken hand and the Staph infection I got and the heart infection from it, and all the tests, WELL the Stress test came back, GREAT, the Ultrasound came back normal too.....

THEN, I went to see a Cardiologist, WELL he suggested a heart catheterization....I went through that this past Tuesday............Seems, I have REALLY bigger fish to fry right? WELL NO! I am going in for open heart surgery! The Cath came back, I have 3 blockages, (Actually 4), but the 4th isn't to sure they can get to it, and its only the small veins, the other 3 are all rather important ones! I need a triple bypass at this point! Before he gave me the news, he looked at me and was like "your heart is whole, and healthy! I'm surprised you have had at least one possibly 2 heart attacks!" I was like WTF? (Excuse the French guys......) Altho, I didn't say that to him, he was giving me the news on what he found!

Hell, I'm 34 years old, and I have the health of what seems to be a 60 year old and then on top of this the other dark meat, I'm Diabetic, and have been since I was 2......March the 3rd, makes it 33 years I've had Diabetes, which is what is to blame as my blood pressure and Cholesterol are both under control! PLUS in pretty good shape to boot! Outside of the blockages!

All I can say everyone, please forgive me, this is the worst possible news I could have gotten! AS I'm going to be literally cracked open like an egg! Full blown open heart surgery.... they tell me heal time is 12 weeks.....those that are customers, and those I have trades going on with, I'm going to do my best to get hose trades out in the mail and get whatever work I can done, in the shop before the surgery, as if something happens, My wife won't know what to do to make things right!

All I can ask for at this point, is keep me in your prayers! I don't know how this one is going to go! As this is something completely new to me and as I know and have heard, pain full! BUT, I will try to be around after its all said and done with!
