I have a computer power unit I wanna use. I was told it has 3 different voltages: 3 VDC, 5 VDC, and 12 VDC. I have a local computer guy that likes to re-use stuff out of computers as I do. What else could I use this for? I thought of using it to power lights and what not.

It should also have negative 12 volts as well, depending on the age. If this is a PC power supply it's usable, if it's a Laptop brick power supply , they are generally not, as they require some sort of sensor input to cause the voltages to generate, otherwise you never see any out the end of the small plug. Good luck on your fun project!

I rebuilt one of these as a power supply for testing things. I drilled holes on the top of the power supply an placed post for 5v and 12v. Using alligator clips I can apply clean power to test locomotives, lights etc. Nice part is when I am not using in to test things it has more than enough power to run all my lights. Only down side is the sound of the fan. If it is while running the layout I prefer not to hear it.
