A question for the group--I have a Tyco/Mantua reefer (red-box however, sorry brown-boxers!) that is somewhat different from the usual 'wood' reefers (Swift, Purina, Armor, etc., etc.). It is lettered for 'Borden Cheeses,' and has metal lithographed sides attached to the plastic body. Is anyone familiar with these? Did they come in anything else but Borden? Is there anything under the metal sides (I don't want to look because I'd have to bend the tabs and compromise the car)? Thanks, and keep those Tycos rolling!

Hi Chris. The Car you have is part of a Group of 6 Refrigerator cars. They were first cataloged in the 50's. Metal Lithographed Sides, Plastic ends. The group consists of: 313A Burlington Express Reefer, 313B Crazy Crystals Water, 313C Borden's Fine Cheeses, 313D Pluto Water, 313E Land O'Lakes, 313F Baby Ruth. They first came in kit form, later in RTR. I have some of them. I don't know for sure if they were made by Tyco. I seem to remember seeing them in Early Tyco boxes. By the way there is nothing but, Air inside the Car. [:)] Carl

Chris: The six Mantua Tyco metal sided reefers were included in high-end Tyco sets for 1958 and 1959 in Tyco red boxes typical of the period with white card-stock inserts manufactured specifucally for the metal reefers. The sets I've seen from this transitional period (blue-box to red-box) are rather frustrating in that individual red boxes were frequently un-stamped, making specific attribution difficult for those years without a set master box. Mantua seems to have kept the old metal-sided reefer kits in inventory for some time after their all plastic bodied replacements of 1960 as I have boxed examples of the metal sided cars in packaging from long-past the "retirement" of these interesting cars from the Tyco line. Frequently the examples that show up in shows or on eBay will sport rigid frames and Mantua loop couplers, suggesting they're from the old Mantua line or early Blue Box Tyco line. These are all beautifully lithographed cars, some of Mantua's best offerings. I particularly like the Crazy Crystals and Pluto Water cars. For what its worth... Magnolia Academy
