I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

there is no valve gear on that engine. The valve guide would guide the operating rod for the valve gear. That is guiding the piston. In this type the piston is hung from above in a slide. So it is a piston slide or piston guide. In a crosshead the piston is supported from above and below with guide bars. There is a crosshead support that keeps the rods in place. frank

Model Graphics has dry transfer lettering. A decent model train hobby shop usually has them. It takes a bit of practice and patience to get them exactly right. I've used them a couple of times.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Not to get too OT and start a flame war, buuut... even Mantua instructions refer to them as crosshead guides. Note step 11.
http://www.hoseeker.org/assemblyexplosionMantua/mantua060bigsix2181958pg2.jpg
The crosshead is the part that the piston fits into, and the bearing surfaces that support it make up the guide. Those that ride between two bars are known as alligator crossheads, because the guide bars are roughly like the jaws of a gator. The single bar crosshead guide that suspends it from above like those on Mantua steamers is the Laird type:
http://yardbirdtrains.com/YB-Information-inst-M760.htm
I always wondered why Mantua only made the Laird type (not counting the Tyco Chattanooga).

What does "OT" mean? , seriously.
Second, there might be a mixed bag of nomenclature depending on who built the locomotive. Seems I come across slightly varying terms in regards to trains, .....cars and airplane,... parts.

Just an FYI - this is a VERY early version - notice that there are no steps to the cab. The steps first appeared in the 1956 catalog. I just got one too.

Those little side tanks are cool and the idea of not having to drag around a tender. Be interesting to know the difference in the personalities of the engineers who operated these little hot rods versus the guys who operated the big muscle. I got one of those a while back (eBay). Not as old as yours Jim. Mine originally had a Southern Pacific lettering. At first, I wasn't going to mess with it, and let it have that vintage look. Then as I took it apart to clean it up, one thing led to another. It's almost black; it's Brunswick Green with a Graphite smoke box. Black stack and frame. Light green cab interior and mineral red window frame and number plate and then brass on the bell and whistle. It runs pretty decent. It seems to me the tank car (Athearn, I think) is kind of interesting in that it reads "domestic water". I haven't seen another like that? First photo is the eBay photo of the engine as I received it and the others were taken just now.

I've noticed that too.
