Hi, even though I signed up on this forum a while back, I have just really become active. That said, when it comes to these online forums and message boards, I really don't know my way around and I want to make sure that I don't break the rules or upset anyone. Is there a place on this site that spells out what is and is not acceptable? For instance, am I allowed to post my private email address in a forum post?
On another subject, I see where some members have a notation next to their names in the far left column when posting, like "Big Boy" or "Switcher." What is this? Can I change it? If so, please tell me how. Also, can I load a custom avatar?
Any pointers would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Allen AKA Streamliner

There's not really an official boilerplate set of rules here... it's sort of self-policing and evolves. For the most part it works pretty well.
Generally I would say basic common sense applies:
- Don't say anything you wouldn't want your kids or grandma to read. - Try to post new topics in the appropriate Sub-forum (if in doubt, it's a "Loose End"). - One man's trash is another's treasure, so leave the flaming and trolling and other immaturity to the rest of the internet and other train forums... - Keep sale and trade listings in the Trading Post and on topic. No spam. - Ebay threads have a way of going sour and generally are mean-spirited in tone. - Nobody is an expert... and everybody started somewhere.
If any of the above seems unclear, remember this forum exists to talk about the silliness that is toy trains, and not societal improvement that is medicinal cure, so nobody can really claim any moral high ground here. Have fun and keep it simple.

I saw a few Forum tips and "rules" in the Forum Updates section.

Just a word of advice about posting your email address in any forum. It is generally not a good ides. This is not because of the members here. It is not against the rules. It is just a good practice for using the internet in general. There are less than respectable people on the internet that go trolling forums for phone numbers and emails. They take good ones and compile list and sell then to spammers.
If you want to give out your email address or shipping information such as for making a sale in the For Sale forum then using a PM is a safe method. This is safer because you are sending the information only to the intended recipient.

Never insult a TYCO train product. Never stop thinking that TYCO trains were, are and will always be model railroad items, not "toy trains". Never think any question you may have about any aspect of model railroading is too silly to ask, because it is not! Never think, that for a minute, the question you just asked is without merit- because one of the forum members may have an informed response which may be of help. Don't be shy.

To expand on the Ebay mention, basically don't post CURRENT auctions, as people here may be bidding on them and don't want unnecessary competition if no one else knows about it yet. And it causes bad blood when some members bid against each other for some reason. Only exception is the hyper-inflated auctions for enormous Starting bids that no sane Tyco'er will ever bid on. There's a thread for that, actually. You can mention you saw such and such an item on Ebay, just don't link to it I think is the current etiquette . We're a pretty tolerant bunch for the most part, we all have our likes, dislikes, etc of particular train equipment. Just keep it reasonable, and you should be fine.

I can tell you what I like a out this forum and that is that the guys here are probably having the most fun of all model railroaders. No mans trains here are considered junk and for the most part, we love hearing of deals that fellow posters scored on rather than hearing about someone spending a fortune on one of those newer models. If you are hear than you probably fell the same about tyco and the other brands, the brabds that other forums consider toy trains. Railroading should be fun and if that's the case with you, then there are no rules here.
If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right.

the quote below is quite on spot, and from a security point of view its just plain dumb to do, also another way to further protect your self is when your PMing your email its best to do something similar to the following to reduce the chance of bots trolling forums for emails and make it harder (tho im sure people are adapting things...)
email@domain[DOT]com
in general it just makes it harder for bots and other auto trollers to get your email...
