So my Godson is 4 right now, and he has a Bachmann Thomas set. His latest craze is Spiderman though, and since they've moved to a new house, "Uncle Dan" wants to design a small layout for him.
I'm thinking 4X6ish with maybe some cardstock buildings. Looking at the cool "themed" sets of the 80's, I'm trying to put together something I can assemble pretty cheap (I'm on a limited budget)
Action cars are good, and I was thinking just printing decals/stickers on adhesive paper.
Doesn't have to be Tyco, just pretty indestructable ;)
All I have so far is possibly an RF16, A searchlight work caboose and maybe a Cox firefighting car as a Webslinging car...
Thoughts? Regards, Dan

Action cars are hard to find in HO without paying some serious cash! I say use some newer Bachmann, Athearn BB, or Walthers "Train Line". Tyco is OK, just not for kids. Just my 2 cents! Keep us updated, I wanna see this for myself!
" Heck with counting 'em rivets, TRAINS ARE FOR FUN! Not called the Mad Scientist for nothing either!"

The fact that Walthers has the Firefighting car as part of the Trainline series is awesome. I still like the idea of an RF16 - Not much to break :P
I'd almost be tempted to search for one of the MP/Roco units with the big can motor in it.
The decals will probably be printed on label paper and stuck on (or I could just paint the cars and he could do it)
Tyco Searchlight cars are pretty common from the look of it. I had a LL car as a kid, but the Tyco is more impressive I think.

Depending on your customizing skill level (and how far you want to take this, degree of difficulty, et.)… one idea I had was possibility of using actual Spiderman comic book panels in some way - cutting out pix of Spiderman from comic book, pasting them onto engine or cars, then sealing in some way. Another idea could be doing Spiderman engine followed by your godson's favorite villians as the rolling stock behind it. Too many ideas for this project, too little time...

Maybe these decals would help a project like this… http://www.micromark.com/decal-paper-try-it-pack-for-ink-jet-printers,8257.html

look for a product called transfer medium available at chain craft stores. it might come in handy if you are going the route of using images from actual comic books. Spiderman and tall buildings go hand in hand, have you considered blue or pink foam skyscrapers painted gray or silver with some simple horizontal and vertical lines to add some interest? I actually bought a Spiderman action set for my son a few years back that came with a nice cardboard cityscape and some structures that were close to HO. It was a kid friendly set that could go well with some custom painted Tyco train. I actually did my own additions to an A-Team set with some cars that were never offered with the original A-Team train. The original locomotives were Rf-16s in black and red with press on decals. If you could find one of these sets, the decals would be easy to remove and you would have a black and red train that would look right at home with a Spiderman theme. if you are really lucky, you might find one that never had its original stickers installed.

Here's a tutorial on the transfer medium… http://www.instructables.com/id/Image-Transfers-with-Acrylic-Gel-Medium/?ALLSTEPS - I've never done this but it sounds interesting.

VIA Rail had a couple of locomotives decorated to promote "Spiderman 2":
