So I opened up my custom HO Roundhouse SSW set which consisted of a 4-4-2, auxilary tender, 5 matching coaches, and a caboose. I screwed down the motor wire to the tender frame and it didn't run, the tender wheels are on the correct sides but what makes no sense is when you unscrew the boiler and lift it off the frame slightly it fires right up! Then when you put it back down it stops? It's really frustrating being the loco was said to run good. I don't mind having to do some work here and there but not on Christmas! Anyways could someone tell me what the issue is and how to fix it? Just plain makes no sense. Thanks!

Well, it is obviously boiler related. So there is obviously a short, and when you lift it up, it unshorts enough to work. Which could be the boiler is contacting an electrical connection which it should not be doing. So take the boiler off completely, and see if any wires or solder lugs are bent out and could be touching the boiler when it's fully screwed down. Or there is some insulation missing under it. Either way, the boiler is causing the short circuit from your brief description. Could have worked before, and then some vibration from shipping? may have caused some connection to contact the boiler. But obviously it's right there under your nose. :)

You are absolutely right Jerry! I had my dad take a look who's been electrician for 30+ years at ADT and here knows it's a short. There's an wire that broke off it's sautered position and he says it's touching the motor or boiler and causing it to short. Were gonna check everything else too. Preferably I like repairing engines and I only come to my dad when it's wiring related. Everything I've been able to handle. I love repairing engines but don't worry there's detail parts broken off due to bad packaging that I'll put on after it runs. Thanks for your help jerry! Much appreciated!

Definately my 2nd favorite steamer. Loved her so much i put it into my shop with my other favorites. There;s one catch its rail on the shop floor
sautered wire in the foreground
here she is on seperate rail! My Seybold Locomotive Works

Nice Point-to-Point layout ya got there! I see a "BUG" in the design ( well, next to it, anyway ). Must be another project. Glad you found the problem and were able to re-solder the connection properly. Always good to get things properly fixed right. Wiring is not such a hard thing to do, it just takes some patience and a diagnostic thinking pattern to find out what is wrong.
