I see there is one in Edison in November and another in Somerset in January. Which one is better for picking up old (50's) tyco stuff?

It's hit or miss for vintage stuff like that. Neither date is better or worse, although the November show is much more crowded.

Lately, I have seen less Tyco and Athearn Blue Box engines at any train show in NJ or Pa. I haven't seen many boxes of junker engines if any lately too....

It depends really which one gets more local dealers. They have a group of larger dealers who travel to all their shows, and buy multiple tables, and each one gets a select group of local guys - all you really need to sell is a tax number. Their tables are about the most expensive of any show short of the big Amherst MA show.
Greenberg pulled a stinker up here, they had to cancel their one show that I was doing, so to replace it they moved it 80 miles away and put it opposite an existing show - which all the smaller, local dealers have already paid for tables at because at the end of the fall show you sign up for the spring one, or risk not getting in because it sells out. The kicker for me is the new location is only 10 min from my house - and I can't sell at it, because I can't do just one day there. Instead I'll go to the show I'm already paid for, 100 miles away.

I hate to say it but I am giving up on the Greenberg shows unless there is nothing eles going on that day. The last three I was at there were mainly large venders with new stuff and very little used items or local tables. The last one I was at claimed in there flyer they would fill the gym of a collage. I got there and only 2/3 of it had tables. On top of that on isle was run by only two vendors. The displays were not even running with the exception of one since there was no power. The Greenberg prices are high also. There are better deals at my LHS and no admission fee there. For the dealers that did have used items BB locos that were used were going for $5 - $10 less than a new Spectrum. They wanted in the $15 range for unbuilt BB kits. Also when they say they close at 5 the venders start packing up at 4.
The other shows in the area are primarily LHS and local individules. Prices are better as is the selection. There are displays that are running.

Well, you don't go to a show at 4:00 on the second day and expect to find any deals - they're gone, the sellers have sold what they're going to sell, and they want to get out and go home. Especially on a Sunday where between noon and end of show maybe you sell one or two things.

Here's the flip side of the coin. The last show I attended I couldn't get there until late on the second day. I was somewhat irked that vendors were packing up an hour before closing.

When I said they were packing up early I ment on the first day. I normally go near when they open. Then take my kids to the displays, leave and eat and return to make a last trip around, generally around 3:30. If they close up around 4:00 on the first day there is not much to do. I understand they want to go on the last day but why does everyone stay at the local shows and not at the Greenberg ones.

Back from my second day at the Greenberg train show. Still found few things more i got. The biggest thing was a 8 passenger car set of Varney Cresatory roof B&O cars. full baggage, conbine, three coaches, dinner, pullman, and observation. Also a Revell gondola Great Northern. And a old Athearn tank car, all metal, Southern Pacific. It was a heck of a day. frank

At a two-day show no one is packing up on day one unless it's real terrible. Greenberg doesn't allow one day sellers. They may take things down and cover up, but that's as far as it goes.
After 10+ years of shows I can tell you it's rare to sell much at the end of the day. The usual pattern is a little slow, guys come in and walk around, and then an hour in it's busy for an hour or two, and the rest of the day you sit there trying to stay awake to have half a dozen more sales in 4 or 5 hours.
Sundays are even worse, total sales are rarely more than half the first day. The last one I did I sold more before the doors opened than I did the entire rest of the day. So when I have two or three hours drive ahead, I start taking down the loose stuff and packing it up, so when the show closes I can be out the door in 20 minutes or so.

* I can only reflect on HO items. At the 2 day shows, as said you get some sales before doors open to the public. This happens at all shows. Dealers always check out everyone else's prices and who has what you are selling. You find out if you are too high or too low. The special sales tables like one with all Lionel HO, had very high prices. Through the two days little changed on his tables. He got to take just about everything home again. * You can easily see the differences between true dealers ( those in it for the sales volume), collectors selling trains, and regular train people sell off whatever they are tired of running and look to change their stuff. You buy from dealers usually a few hours before closing on any day. best prices on the second day. With collectors, they have that E-Bay high price stuck in their head and won't change it. Regular guys you talk to any time. with them you trade as much as buy. *Prices are higher the first day. They come down the second day. Nobody want to that everything home. frank

In general, all of the good deals are done before the general public is admitted. Dealers and their associates are snapping up anything rare or grossly under priced, before the show opens to the public. This applies to all train shows, where they have dealer set up time.

I have no heart-burn with the Edison (Ex-Raritan Arsenal) show. I went around noon the second day. I got: 2 new in the box Bachmann Tropicana cars for $5 each - Like $10 min on Ebay before you even add in the S&H! [always a sucker for them since I used to see the Tropicana train parked in Newark] a mint Pennline PRR Caboose for $1. A like new AHM/Rivarossi Santa Fe C-Liner B unit for $5. This will get a PRR B unit body I have to make a PRR C-Liner A-B set (Yes I know the real ones were green for freight, but the tuscan looks good to me). and some other junk.
And I like to see the layouts. This year in addition to the couple O gage and HO there was an N gage layout with a circus module (about 6 feet long) and an airport (cool).
There was also a Lionel O gage train with constellation box cars - like with the big dipper in leds on the side of a box car - never say that before.
BTW - The pickle guy wasnlt there.

Nelson -
I got those shells from a dealer/buddy. I waited a long time to get those. I had a clear FM chassis so it is all together now. I will hang on to them.

AF,
Understood. I have a number of clear chassis in waiting, but already have one clear shell. I have a clear Rivarossi B unit chassis, and I'd love to cast up a clear shell for it.

I ask the guy I got the shell from if AHM ever made a clear "B" Unit shell, he said he didn't think so. The clear chassis was made by AHM for Lionel.

The clear chassis were first made by Rivarossi for their later Lionel units (which started with sheet brass frames & Bakelite shells), but I've never heard of a clear shell with the Rivarossi name on it. If there are any out there, they're very rare, but Rivarossi never made a shell without their name on it. In 1963 Mehano took over manufacturing the C-Liner under Rivarossi license with their new drive, and AHM ordered clear shells for the dealers to show it off.
http://www.hoseeker.org/ahminformation/ahmcatalog1963page02.jpg
There was no reason for a clear B unit since they were unpowered, but casting them in clear resin would be pretty cool. It would work for the A units as well.
