Anybody here into HOn30 or ever do a HOn30 conversion?

I am an armchair modeler so far, and own nothing in HOn30, but I can tell you lots about the subject from all I've researched.
For all ya that may never heard of it, it's 30" (2.5 foot) HO scale (1:87) that runs on standard gauge N-scale track (close enough to 2.5' HO). If you have access to lots of inexpensive N stuff, a hack saw, and imagination, you can build anything.
AHM had the start but their locomotives are blenders, Roco has decent but pricey/rarer equipment that's distictively European, and Con-Cor markets reruns of retooled AHM sets.
Also known as HOe, hoe, HOE, HO2 1/2.

I used to have an HOn30 line on one of my earlier layouts. The cars were all scratch built and the loco was a kitbashed Bachmann 0-4-0T I also built another HOn30 locomotive for a friend for his sugar cane railroad.

That is really cool, Ray. How is it powered? Other than the wires I can't see any sign of a motor or gearing.

It has a small rectangular motor in the cab. The chassis is from a Bachmann N scale Dockside. Almost everything else was made of brass.

It even had operating link and pin couplers.

Are those link and pin couplers available commercially or are they scratchbuilt? Either way they're really cool!

I am thinking about making a few HOn30 pieces. I like kitbashing and narrow gauge stuff doesn't have to follow any established pattern. I was told that an N scale 0-6-0 steam engine makes a decent basis for a locomotive. Use an HO scale cab, enlarge the walkway, HO size headlight, and move or delete the handrails? Not really sure. Haven't looked at any locos, yet. N scale track is cheaper than HOn3 stuff and easier to find.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I've done some...an Atlas 0-6-0 mech and an N scale passenger car truck started these...

...This was built onto a Model Power mech, not recommended as it doesn't run very well...

...and this was built onto an Atlas U boat and ran for 6 hours straight its first run at a local train show...

Those link and pin couplers were built by modifying N scale Rapido couplers.

I really like this locomotive. Painted well, great color scheme, looks appropriate for the job. There's just one thing I'm not a fan of; that cab looks like it would make the rear of the locomotive rear-heavy. A lot of narrow gauge/ tank engine locomotives have that because of real-world weight distribution (cabs are light) but that just looks odd to me. As a model with the motor back there, wouldn't there be a balance problem?

There is alot of brass and solder ahead of the drive wheels and the side tanks are filled with lead. It is heavier than it looks.

Ray,
I remember now seeing that loco on the 2 Guys forum. That motor is perfect for the cab. Didn't recognize it painted.
Shay, awesome stuff. The 0-6-0's a hoot.
