Just look at this! I don't know whether it came with a European Mallet of some sort of if someone just made a motorized steam tender But it's definately a Rivarossi 0-8-0 running gear.

Must been a start for a fail'd Barret! The unit looks like it's based on a 'Rossi mallet of some type.

The Triplex was pretty much a failure. The boiler didn't produce enough steam to supply 3 engines, and the engine under the tender would slip as fuel was used up.

The auction you see looks to be a Triplex build, or an attempt, as posted above.....

HOWEVER the tender shell seen in that auction is from a Rivarossi 0-8-0, ALONG with a Rivarossi 0-8-0 engine set....

Not a bad looking conversion, BUT I wonder if it runs?

As Nelson said the REAL life models of the Triplexs were failures, they didn't have a big enough boiler to keep up withtbe steam needs of the 3 steam chests, not to mention, wasn't very fast running either! I think top MPH was like 15!!!!! And then, not to long till they ran out of boiler pressure to keep the cylinders powered, and then to add to it would loose TE "Tractive Effort" as the tender ran low on water and coal weight to keep the drivers "adhered" to the rails they were running on.....

The models tho, would out run the real thing by far! I've re-motored a brass one..... had THREE can motors in it!

John, I read that the Triplex hostlers often banged on the steam gauge, hoping it would read a few more PSI. Garrats also suffered from TE loss due to fuel depletion, but I guess it wasn't as pronounced since the drivers also bore the weight of the boiler and frame.

The Big Boy was almost 133 feet long stem to stern, and is the longest save for the Jawn Henry and C&O turbines. The following page has charts that pit the specs of the largest against each other.

http://www.steamlocomotive.com/misc/largest.shtml

The Virginian and Erie Triplexes have higher TE ratings than the big Boy, but with their low speed and and poor efficiency it's unlikely they would have bested them. It's well known that the Allegheny was more powerful, but a Big Boy could have dragged it from a standing start due to higher starting TE.

Nelsons right! The Big Boy wasn't the "largest" nor was the most powerful!

For the longest time the "Yellowstone's" were largest till 1941, and the Big Boy came along.....But, as Nelson stated, the Big Boys had poor "TE" ratings being compared to it and its size. The "Pocket Yellowstone's" of the B&O (Or EM-1 class), could drag an Allegheny all day long as the Big Boy would drag it! HOWEVER something that's overlooked, the B&O's EM-1 Yellowstone's had a higher TE then even the C&O's H-8 did! The C&O's Allegheny had 110,200 pounds of Tractive Effort whereas the B&O's EM-1 Yellowstone's had 115,000 pounds of Tractive Effort.

Then a further inspection, the C&O's H-8 had a factor of adhesion of 4.10, where the B&O's EM-1 had a Factor of adhesion of 4.22.......AND the EM-1 was lighter on the rail! With this, the Big Boy only had a Factor of Adhesion of 4.11! I just can't imagine that! And it too, was lighter on the rail then the C&O's H-8 was!

ALL very interesting.....I'm still amazed art the Western Maryland Challenger......VERY impressive power, BUT was VERY slippery too! The weight on its drivers was not even close to the B&O's EM-1, and the crews spoke of it (I had a friend), that was a neighbor that I lost about 9 years ago, that was an engineer on the WM and ran the Challengers a bit before the end of steam and he hated them! I remember him telling me to "throw him in one of the M-1'a and he'd take the train anywhere the WM wanted it....But you wouldn't do that with the M-2!" I was surprised at that just to hear it as the M-2's were VERY picture-istic!!!! As you seen them in ALL the WM's ads and stuff!

Hell, I think the WM's I-2's were about, if not stronger then the WM Challengers! And thats even more, interesting!
