I've been assembling some items sold as "parts". This is what I expected:

and this is what I got:

I think the boiler is free of Zamac Rot; and the drivers look OK.
I want to insert about 1/4 inch additional length into the boiler just behind the sand dome. I welcome any words of wisdom on how I might go about doing this.

I want to position the drivers about 1/4 inch to the rear of their original position to leave room for a front truck axle behind the steam chest. Since the original frame is dirt, I'll need to bash or fabricate.

Fun and games! OTTB

Why not keep it as an original 2-8-0?

I bought one of those at a swap meet in similar (maybe not as bad) shape.
I modified a Tyco 2-8-0 chassis to fit under the Varney boiler.
The 4-8-0 chassis isn't a bad idea. The easiest way might be to find another frame to modify but building one from scratch isn't that difficult.

Here's a few photos of the one I modified.
Hope they help.

Great pictures, Ray! I have made another running Varney 2-8-0 using parts from the above coupled with a 2-6-0 tender. It needs more work before paint because the cross heads have Zamc Rot.

My goal for the extra boiler is to model N&W 4-8-0 ( Strasburg RR http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/tr_src475a.jpg)

That will be an interesting locomotive to model.
Keep us posted on your progress.
