I'm looking to buy a digital cam corder this year. How here has good recommendations for a good one for under $400? I like to rail fan and film model train displays/layouts. I need one thats simple and user friendly and makes for good HD quailites. I don't care about the slow mo features etc etc.
" Heck with counting 'em rivets, TRAINS ARE FOR FUN! Not called the Mad Scientist for nothing either!"

What are you looking to store / view your videos on? For me 720 HD with stereo sound is fine at 30 FPS. My Nikon L120 supports this just fine. It also has a 21x zoom and the ability to take excellent photos. On top of that it is small and lightweight. It is a camera though so the video is not as good as a dedicated camcorder, but I paid $175.
I have seen DSLR cameras in that range that come close the digital camcorders in quality. The advantage with a DSLR is the ability to use multiple lenses. If you cannot get close use a telephoto.
These are my thoughts though, I tend to lean more twords photography with some video.
