There is NO limit. Its made to run diesels as many as needed for any one train. They can "MU" as many as they need for the train to move, MU as said is "M"ultiple "U"nit.
As for the Chicago Great Western, The Baltimore And Ohio, ALSO could have done that, with Sharks! ABBBBBBBA at a time....Theres a picture of this, someplace! Which looked monsterous to say the least!
