So after the break-in and the theft of all my trains - this is as close as I could get to Christmas morning 1977. Just got this off eBay. Took me 10 minutes to unwrap it and it is MINT!

I'm having a lot of fun trying to recreate everything and find new stuff though!

Hi All,
This is my SOTW: Two of them in fact. Just purchased off of eBay.
They are two sets of a pretty rare Athearn GP9 powered International Minerals and Chemical engines & cars.
Can anyone tell me a little about the history?
Thanks in advance!

Sean

Sean - neat find! I like the much less common road names.

Frank,
I remembered seeing a picture of one on this forum I think a year or so ago. I remembered it for some reason. I saw the colors and they stuck in my eye. When i saw the listing about 1 hour before it ended the other day, I did not remember anything about the name on the loco, but i remembered it was a rare set and I remembered the color scheme. I then set my bid, probably not nearly as high as I should of since I got the lot for ~$10 less than my max of $36.
I poked around the photos and was able to come up with the mane on the side of the engine by doing a search on this site with the words I could see in the bad photos. (after purchasing it and then researching it, which is the opposite of what one should do) I did find this message from lvrr325 Posted - November 11 2008:
quote:I forget the name of the company, International Mining or something like that, but it's shown in both the Greenberg and Krause guides... apparently only two or three sets are known to exist. Everything was done in the company's colors - green and yellow GP9, boxcar, tank car, maybe a couple other cars, and a caboose. Done in the 60s. Different colors than the Reading GP30, too, no mistaking one for the other. I'd say if you came up with a mint in the box set and put it on eBay, it would bring enough to buy a new car - and a fairly expensive one at that. |
Now taking that with a grain of salt... maybe a couple grains since just by my photos alone, I have at least doubled the known existence of the complete sets...to a total of 4 I hardly believe that I could buy a car with the sale of the lot, but i would believe that they are worth a pretty penny or two.
I do not have either of the guides he references though, but any info on them might be very nice to have.

The IMCX set was the first promo set ever made by Athearn. Made exclusively for the company in 1962 as gifts for major clients. It is still unknown how many sets exist complete. You have 2, I have one and legendary collectors Al Young and Peter Markman each have at least one set as well. They are very rare and despite some unfortunate damage to some of the cars - they are worth way more than what you got them for. Id keep the best pieces condition wise and sell the other one.

Now that's some mighty meaty info there Larry!
Actually, I'll probably list the better condition pieces and keep (or hold onto a little longer) the rougher pieces. But then again, who knows. I would like to get an idea as to their value before I do anything. I hat selling something if I do not know what it is worth up front. However since all proceeds get put toward the restoration of my 1969 Mustang, I can not be too picky.
Thanks again.

Larry,
I was able to look up Peter's username as you had it posted in an earlier message. I sent him a message through eBay and hopefully he will get back to me. I would sure like to have an idea as to their value before i do anything with them.
Thanks again!

I couldnt give you a specific amount truthfully - there is one guy on ebay that has been trying to sell a complete set one piece at a time for pretty high dollar (tho he discounts them down - all of them are damaged in some way for the most part).
He has sold a couple of them (the GP7 finally went after almost a year of being listed). I got my entire set (with everything they came with) for a really good price IMHO (I know its probably worth way more than what I paid) Larry

Thanks a Bunch Larry!

No problem Larry.. I am pretty good with it now.
Given that a mint one sold for $600 in the box, I figure I could/should expect on average ~$150-$200 for each set of mine. Even $200 for both I think I could live with considering what I paid. Now given that I have some real idea as to what they might be worth, it is easier to decide what to do with them. Since my dreams of retiring off of the sale of the better of the two sets have been crushed, I may just keep the best of each and sell the rest. Most likely individually for those people out there needing only the one piece or two to complete their sets.
Anyway you look at though, it looks pretty good to me.
Thanks again! Sean
