Guys, I know a few of you have seen my display cases into my shop, with some past pictures of mine. Well, I got to thinking, you all know the B&O's EM-1, 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" steam loco is my favorite, and having a Spectrum model of one, AND a brass model of one, I thought, maybe I ought to build a nice display case to carry them, together.
Anyway, the pictures your about to see, isn't of the completed display case, its close, but not complete. I have alot of trees to add, and I'm adding 4 LED spot lights to the inside top corners...
So, we have a display case, with NO shelves, to hold 2 Articulated steamers!

Questions and comments WELCOME!
I have saved this project to be my 1,000 posting to the TYCO forums!
ENJOY!
~John

(swearing) I think the details I'd do is make the signals work & crossing signals flash Also string wire between the poles

Thank you Walt! As you can see, I got alot more details I want to add, and some scenery to complete...... (I was saving this one to make my 1,000 th posting to the forums and it came up quick and sadly I didn't have nearly the time to get the display case any closer to being done to that point of 1,000 postings!

Ben, I would have done the signals working and the flashing cross bucks, BUT I didn't want to "take away" from the locomotives on display, BUT to that, I wanted to do the best I could with little expense......I had EVERYTHING seen here almost to make it......I had a budget I had to fall within for this one! The signals I wasn't to worried about "lighting" as they on the angle that they are, wouldn't have been seen very well anyway, even lit!
HOWEVER, as I mentioned, there is alot more to go into it, that I have..... there is a second telephone pole to add, on the other side of the tracks...... Which will have the wires!
I also have the Telegraph wires to add to the lower display track, thats only partially ballasted right now, plus the remaining ballast, and shrubery to add in as well, and the "water" in the ditch on the left hand side, on the lower track.....
If you look close the "girder of the trestle still needs bridge track added in as well, along with the upper "telegraph" poles and wires!
I've also dated the landscaping! Its late September, early October .......you can't tell that now, but you will as the land don't carry a "date" but that road you see, will have a BRAND NEW 1944 Pick up painted for the B&O's signal crew, waiting on the locomotive to pass!
BUT, I also have ALOT of fall colored trees to add as the tree line, will be about an inch or so, below the bottom of the trestles girder that has "Baltimore & Ohio" on it.......
Needless to say, I have alittle ways yet to go on this one before I call it ready for hanging on the wall......plus its going to have 4 LED spot lights in the top inside corners to shine down onto the 2 B&O EM-1's in this case!

Ohh, and I forgot that I'm going to weather the bridge girder too, that has the lettering on it BUT, I just added the decals, and need to wait till they are ready for any "sealing over" paint BEFORE the dullcote is added the the whole bridge.....
THEN, I'll add in the bridge track as well! Which is 2 sections of bridge track from Walthers........with inside "guard" rails!

You're welcome, John.. I really like the case and would love to have one.. Are these going to be for sale in the future?
I don't have any Steamers to put in one but I believe it's a great display for any HO train items.. Two thumbs up!!

Walt, Actually YES, this was one idea I had that I actually gave way to adding it to my product line!
What might your ideas come too, in diesel (I am really era based to what the display case will "display" to the era model)
OR to include anyone into the "case" design and make what that person is looking for is ALWAYS welcome!
Case size, is made to spec as well......The one you see here is 18 inches tall Inside diameter, and 24 inch wide inside diameter, by 4.5 inch wide front to back inside diameter.....
Which is ALOT going on inside, for that small space!
BUT, if you look, the span from the trestle bent, to the far right abutment, is scale 90 feet, which is a L-O-N-G span for a single trestle section, thats why, I added the road to the display, to justify that span, as I had to curve the track in such a way that I could get it all to fit and clear the locomotive on display as well!
AND to add to that, you can tell the direction the locomotives will be "headed" the signals justify that too! The lower track the front of the loco will be on the left, and the track on the trestle will have the loco headed to the right.....

Jim, You know, a Cab-Forwards is merely a backwards "Yellowstone"!!!! 2 B&O EM-1 "Yellowstone's" will be whats going into the case you see here......... a brass one on the trestle and the Bachmann Spectrum version on the lower track.......

Alco Fan, Thanks! Alot of work went into the display case.....And alot more to go! I figured the case was completed enough for posting......
Which is the reason I posted it, not completed.....I just topped 1,000 postings, for my self and was planning to post that project, for my 1,000 post no matter how close to complete or not it was, whatever part/stage, it was 1,000 was the number!!!!!

Well Jim, You have to see if shes up for such things......(Sadly, my wife has no choice really LOL ) I say that, lightly, as she knows most if not all of whats in display cases in my home, are all re-done, or something custom to them so she has no issue allowing me to "display" my work!
Especially the latest display case, it is as you see here, BUT will have 2 of my best steamers in it, and the brass one, I 100% rebuilt! But the display case pictured here, was sort of inspired by her so.....
This section of the display case:

Has had its "water" added into the ditch! And the bridge "girder" has had the weathering treatment, and dullcote sealant to be added to place once all the trees are planted, and the track to cross the bridge is ready for installation now too!

Hyde, Yeah....I want a Climax but, the cost right now.....I can't justify it.
As for the Shay, its a Bachmann Spectrum unit, runs well!!!!
Remember, you get a Shay and a Heisler, BE SURE to get 3 truck units, they pull WAY better even tho its only a set of extra axles, and about 2 ounces more weight, but it does make a difference!

Well I had a climax, for 4 months then when i went to test it the other week the rear truck went up in smoke removed the tender tank and fried DCC decoder, sent into bachmann with my 4-8-4 the other day, 2 new DCC units will arrive within 2 months. Whenever I send an engine into Bachmann I steal parts off of it took the 4-8-4s wheels and axles, rods, tender, and rivets. Took the main shaft, couplers, coupler mounts, and oil bunker off the climax. Reason being is if i'm getting 2 new units anyways i'd like to have some spare parts though the axles from the old Bachmann plus 4-8-4 will go on my 2-8-2 after they are checked and repaired

Hyde, That may come back to bite you in the @$$! Did Bachmann know those "parts" were missing?
You may get it back, with a note stating that it was in this shape when we got it and we can not do to much with it due to the warranty.....As I had a customer send me a Spectrum 4-8-4 J that was missing a few parts, and I asked how old the unit was, he told me less then 3 months had an issue removed parts from it, sent it to Bachmann, they sent it back saying it wasn't bought like that and thats when he sent it to me to replace the parts and then repair the actual problem, costed more in the long run!
You do that to an Athearn, forget about repairing it, the warranty they have won't even touch it!
You'll be paying for those parts!
Bachmann is same as you may not be a happy customer! In the end!

I'm sending them in for replacement not repair, that's what i'm paying for and via email they know that ahead of time. I had a 2009 spectrum 4-4-0 and I kept ALL the detail parts and back then they gave you a wood load, coal load, and oil bunker, 2 pilot beams, 2 cowcatchers, a snowplow, and tender steps! Sent it into bachmann with the $25 service charge got a brand new one no questions asked, The original had been sent in for a new tender PCB I did not instruct them to replace it but hey i'm happy now! Too bad the new 4-4-0s dont have as much detail parts! I sanded down the oil bunker and put it on my Souther 4-4-0 (dont kill me) I'm a west coast guy all the way! The point is I did not buy these from bachmann and i'm not sending them under warrenty for repair. i want t he 4-8-4 replaced and the climax. I did not want to reassemble the 4-8-4 just to send it in but most of it is there and same with the climax. I'll be very suprised if they send them straight back.

Its easing to know that you had told them about the parts! I'm glad to hear it.....
See the customer that I had to bring me a Bachmann J class N&W did not tell them the parts were missing sent it in with a issue that didn't let it run and they sent it right back within days as I know they did not expect it to be in the shape they got it in, only knowing of the non running issues with it.
Thats when he brought it to me, and I had parts locomotives setting everywhere at the time for it and I added in all the new parts and charged him the cost of the parts plus my time to make a repair and all the replacement parts......
speaking of the Bachmann J class 4-8-4 N&W.....

Yeah the warranty makes a big deal of the whole thing!
The Spectrum Shay, keep your eyes out for one, they come around alot for around the $100 range even on Ebay AS long as they are the older models like mine! (Thats not DCC or sound ready!)
I think I paid $112.00 for mine, BRAND NEW back in 2005!

AND a rivarossi heisler, dont really care if it's 2 or 3 truck. Heck if them Bachmann 2 Truck climaxs weren't so rare i'd want one...after I buy the NWSL re-gear kit after their bad gear problem. But being I don't have a layout right now I shouldn't keep buying more engines BTW do you still have that main rod for and MDC 2-8-0?? We can work it in with the rivarossi 0-8-0 boiler deal.

Phillip, THANKS! I haven't done much on it as I suffered out a broken hand... Which is healing well (I have more use of it then I did in past weeks)
BUT once I can, I plan to finish this case as I got 2 B&O EM-1's to put in it.....One Brass, one Bachmann Spectrum. BUT what better way to display them!?
I have gotten alittle more done since that very last picture was taken, but, that was before my hand got broke! I just never got pictures of it!
