I've always been into Model Railroading, mostly spent time around O scale, kitbashing stuff with the family and doing stuff. I got into HO several years ago, figured it would be cheaper than O. Yup, I was right, cheaper, but at the cost of my mind. Built a layout, rebuilt it, and now rebuilding it again. 1st time was we could only run 2 trains at a time. 2nd time, we could run 4 trains at a time but trains would get stuck in tunnels we couldn't reach. 3rd time, hope we're lucky, 2 trains at a time but short tunnels, and the illusion of 4 track operation. Coming up with the plan is another story in itself, it came to me in a dream. My username is very simple. My freelance railroad is the Leigh & Great Lakes railroad. 845 is the number of my first kitbashed locomotive. A 2-6-6-0 mallet. The number came from a record of The Ballad of John Axon in which the number is mentioned in a song and it sounded good. My interests are varied and everywhere. Trains, planes, automobiles, ships, tanks, bridges, buildings, bansai tress, history, fiddling with stuff, etc. I got projects, waaaay too many and the thought being, the more communities I join, the quicker I can get these out of the way to make way for more ideas and projects. Such as a 4-8-0 I thought up of not too long ago. Anywho, ask any questions, i'm bored.

Welcome. I do love John Allen's work myself. His G&D has inspired me! Do show off that 2-6-6-0!

John Allen had half of his regrettably short lifetime to work on his G & D, as his career as a professional photographer blessed him with sufficient income to enable him to play with trains as a "second" profession, time-wise and money-wise. Few of us are as fortunate, but his work was pioneering, to say the least, and the bar he set, given the available marketplace resources of his era (until the 1960s) is high enough to be considered one of the truly great figures of our hobby. I only wish that there was more information, other than Linn Wescott's book (written a year before his own passing) on John Allen, and the magic world he created.

| For the 2-8-0, it's all IHC. For the 2-6-6-0, it's a Mantua logger with a tyco 2-8-0 boiler. Tender is rivarossi.

How well does the Mantua logger pull and is it the new run (can motor and flywheel) or the older Pittman style?

| I think it was the older style pittman motor. I replaced it with a can motor with flywheel. I've never had enough track laid out to properly test this engine out. When I did, the cat knocked it off the table and i had to repair my engine. Repaired, but the table is taken up by stuff and tools for the 4-8-0's

Mike, That 2-6-6-0 looks GREAT! Just a good looking Mallet! NOW, noticing your 2-8-0, in B&O, got me to thinking, you know that 2-6-6-0, is a GREAT base model to make the B&O's "Old Maude" 0-6-6-0, which happens to be the USA first "Mallet" steam locomotive! And for a 1904, locomotive, was a beast.......
I myself, have been kinda-sorta working on a 0-6-6-0, to make the B&O's famed "Old Maude" myself as I'm an avid B&O modeler.....Just to add another Mallet/Articulated into my already vast collection of said locomotives.
Great work on the 2 you pictured non-the-less! I look forward in seeing more of your collection....
With your railroad, where is its base "area" of the country?

| I was thinking a little to the north and a little west of central Pennsylvania. A lot of wilderness and mountains up there, plenty of space to place some fictional towns.

Sounds like what I'm doing, altho, I'm modeling the layout after B&O's "Sand Patch" I am doing it in the steam era to run all sorts of things right up to the present day CSX!

I think your 2-6-6-0 is great - the choice of a 2-8-0 boiler is inspired.

| The locomotive was built form an article. I have to find it again. I took some liberties with the article, either I did something wrong or it wasn't clear enough.

| Thanks! If anyone is interested, I can share the article I built the 2-6-6-0 from. I've seen other attempts at making the 2-6-6-0 but never seen it completed. I some other articles I've been collecting over the years from old magazines that I want to attempt at building.
