Guys, Posting something here that I don't believe I have. I know I have mentioned it, but thats it! So, I thought I'd post some pictures of whats being done to this model.
I got some time ago a Mantua 4-6-2 that has the old gear box cover tranfer gear box. In GREAT shape.
Well with my knowledge of the B&O, and the research I've done, the Mantua light boiler is a really close model to a B&O P-7 boiler, and with alittle work and alot of brass detail parts can be made to look really good!
And thats just what I plan to do.....I'm working on building tghe B&O's P-7e 4-6-2, #5314.
Heres is the progress to this model.

The pilot seen here, is 100% custom, built to the prototype. with a array of brass parts to make it.

And the tender:

The other side of the locomotive:

I stopped working on this locomotive due to a cab. It came with a metal cab, and I wasn't happy with it. (I actually traded it to Nelson, due to my most recent cab casting process of the Rivarossi cab that fits the Rivarossi 2-10-2. Which is a "B&O spotting feature" as they were very distinct in looks, and will be adding that to this model. In the above pictures, you will see the original metal cab.

This is the reason I planned to build this locomotive:

This whole train will be pulled by the above locomotive.
I could NOT stand the thought, of this:

...pulling the B&O's "Capitol Limited" when the train is blue and gray, and the locomotive is green and gray.....
SO, I am building and assembling this:

To be pulled by the B&O's President Washington P-7 #5300 pictured above. I KNOW this train, is NOT prototypical, I just could not resist. IT will look good so.... I thought it was a tasteful choice in colors.
and with that, I got the cars from IHC to build an all green, B&O "National Limited" to go with these and I'm working on the Royal blue as well......PLUS, I have the much newer streamliners to build as well that will be pulled by a set of E-8's as well!

Really looks like it is coming along quite well John.
If you need some specific brass detail parts, ask as I might have them.

Sean, You know, I do need a front end throttle for that blue Mantua P-7e.... as you can see, I had removed all the cast on detail that could be replaced with brass.
Got any?
I have to look and see in my parts bin if I have the brass headlight casting and possibly a base as I think, I'm going to remove the whole Mantua cast on headlight base as you see I left it there and I'm not sure I like the looks of it.
I'm trying to think what else I may need for that locomotive.....

John ; I too have always thought that Mantua choose the B&O pacific as their prototype. You have a way of getting thing done, and do very good work. I can't wait to see how it comes out. I hope you find the proper details needed for the rebuild. * Good luck, and i will also be following this topic. frank

John, If you are referring to the linkage which runs along the boiler engineer's side, coming from the cab and then enters the boiler from just behind the smoke box, then I do believe I do have a few of them.

Frank, I think they did as its so close, its almost to much! Thing is, they left off certain details to make it a "universal" boiler so could be used as a close to the USRA boilers too! Hence the sand line covers off the sand dome!
I'm re-adding these details in brass as once its done, it will look as if it is a brass B&O P-7E, 4-6-2!
I haven't worked on it in awhile, as I was lacking a few brass details!

Sean, What might you want for 2 of them? I got a Mantua 2-8-2, B&O Q-3 I'm building that is a USRA locomotive that requires one as well......Let me know!
Also would you have a brass "Delta" training truck? *Rolls eyes* this is a one off, I just had to ask to see if you may have one!
Let me know! Don't forget, I want that Royal Blue boiler you have too!
Let me know!

I'll have to see how many I have. I would think $5 would cover both. I'll have to see about the truck. I have a ton of trailing trucks, both brass and diecast. I am pretty sure i have a few of them though.

Sean, Thanks! IF you have a truck, I'd like to get one as detailed as very possible! I got an older one that under the firebox of my B&O T class 4-8-2 that I custom made that was a Cal-Scale part, BUT this one will need the Delta truck not the older one. (I can't for the life of me remember the name of the older type trailing trucks) But the one thats under my 4-8-2 has opening hot box lids, and all sorts of other nice detail for a Cal-Scale part......I hope to find a decent looking one if nothing else, it will keep the one it has, OR I'll get a Rivarossi Delta to fit the Mantua frame!
We'll see on that one!
Let me know on the Front End Throttles as I can't get them, locally without a significant amount of trouble!

Justin, Something I didn't point out, do you have a way to remove the "cast on" details? Like the air tanks and the cast on power revese and such? the items below the boiler gangway.....I milled off all these details and while I was at it, I milled the gangway too, just to make it more scale thickness so it looked better then having the thick walkway!
The 2 places a bell can be added by Mantua factory, was removed and the hole filled as I relocated it to the top of the boiler front.
Alot of removal of cast on detail and let me be the first to say, it takes time, go slow and then use a good section of 400 grit sand paper to finish smooth it out. As if you "gouge" you'll be filling ALL of those to get a smooth boiler!
Let me know as this requires some patients and to that you'll probably be using a Dremel to do that.....Your going to need ALOT of the #426 cut off wheels......
I also smoothed out the handrailing post "lugs" and then took off the AUX dome, just in front of the turret cover thats the box closest to the cab.....I smoothed out the top of the feedwater heater thats just in front of the smoke stack, and right above the headlight and added my own casted part for this.
