Hi all.
Well, I have moved into my dorm at WSU now, and the little HO layout that I brought along (affixed to a card table) is working pretty well. Still, I wanted something a little bigger that I could run my larger engines on. So I brought along some larger rolling stock, some EZ track, and even some slot car track (wouldn't you know it, I accidentally only brought one curve piece with me, so the slot car track is currently a static element. ). The other day, I woke from my nap, and, being it was too hot to do anything outside, I got my creative juices flowing and manged to create this in about three hours:

Obviously, I still have a ways to go on the scenery, especially the backdrop, but whaddya think of my paintless, glueless approach to ground cover?
Lemme know whatcha think!

Actually this is my glorified test track...Im buying one of those big out buildings for my layout to be built. I'll be installing one of those "motel room" type heater/ac units It will sit on a concrete pad and will be insulated. I could NEVER leave any "powered" units in this shed. Too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter...too dirty all the time. The floor is also collapsing in one corner.

Yeah? I hear that i once had a layout in a dirty ole coal fired/heated basement, what a mess that was!
As for the test track, with alittle insulation in the walls, and some concrete poured in the corner with the crumbling, you could make that usable. Plus some insulation in the roof rafters.
I'm a carpenter and have worked on worse situations then I see in that shed!

weekendrairoader,
Go State!!! I hope that's what the S in WSU stands for. Man get that education and degree and much success.
Your dorm layout is cool. I went to another State school and they had a RR club on campus, I hope yours does too.

WSU = Washington State University. I was hoping there'd be a model railroad club too, but there isn't. There was a local train club in town that put on a model train show every year up until a few years ago, but they disbanded due to "lack of interest". I'm gonna see what I can do, however, to get the club, or a derivative of it, up and going again. Until then, I'm going to be working on my little layouts here in my dorm.

Nice low-budget operation, nothing wrong with that ! Shoe String Railroading can be quite entertaining in it's own right. Your creativity with the cardboard is worthy of comment. And since it's not high dollar, you won't miss it when you have to disassemble it permanently later on. But at least you're keeping the interest and spirit going while you're waiting for a more permanent venue in the future ( real job, real home, etc ). Keep the wheels moving!

Justin, yes, that is an AC Gilbert Hudson. She still runs pretty well after all these years.

Weekendrailroader!
In some ways I am jealous. I would have never had the nerve to whip out my trains and start playing with them when I was is college in my younger days. I had roommates that would have just destroyed them.
By the time I went back to school at 28, I had my own apartment and no roommate. I had my trains scattered all over my kitchen and for some reason my wife has no recollection of ever having seen them. She seems to think I started this collecting trains thing after we were married and in our own home.
Last fall we tore the roof off of our house and decided to add 4 rooms to our vast ~28x38 attic space. My layout which was up there had to be removed (and consequently torched) to make room for the addition:

Because my wife is constantly tripping over my trains in the basement, she is allowing me to use one of the four rooms for my new train room:

Makes it kind of nice knowing in advance how to wire and construct your train room before it contains any trains or a layout.

Yea I could cut out that section of the floor and put in new runners and redo it... The moles have eaten their way into that corner and the wood has essentially gave way Now the floor is actually on the ground...I think I have enough patience to wait for the other building.
