train show find yesterday...10 bucks to take it home and its in near mint condition. All of the parts (bell, handrails, siderods etc) are still in the parts envelope. I now have at least one example of all 3 Athearn yellowbox era steamers.

Ive read thats an issue with these. Ill find out. My "Little Monster" runs but jerkily. I think it just needs lubrication. Larry

Larry, Sorry to say, but that could be a split gear. If it jerks with sort of an even rhythm, it probably is a split gear that causes the gearing to slow at the same spot with each rotation. Hence.. the jerkiness of the run.
I have heard of people fixing it by sandwiching the gear between two washers. Takes a little work, but it is doable.

Larry, Sorry to say, but that could be a split gear. If it jerks with sort of an even rhythm, it probably is a split gear that causes the gearing to slow at the same spot with each rotation. Hence.. the jerkiness of the run.

Hmmm Ill see about taking it apart at some point I guess. My LM is in mint condition with all parts installed. that one is a booger too with all the add on pieces. Larry

I have a Little Monster in the box that I got from Gareth. It needed work to get it running right, but the gearing is fine. The jerkiness can also be caused by a pickup problem in the frame I had to solve, and the motors are so weak that lack of or old lubricants will cause flaky performance.
