OK, Here is my COTW:
It is a Ambroid payroll car:

That is another on in the plastic bag behind it. It is not completely built yet, but all the important stuff is there. I have at least one more complete model that is packed away in storage...maybe two more.

Why so many rooftop vents? Was the money stinky?
Seriously, that payroll car is an interesting old timer- are there any real prototypes for it?

Nice car Sean, I have been trying to restore an old wooden express reefer kit (Main Line Models or Laconia I think) Hope it turns out as nice as that one. I had to strip off a couple of layers of thick paint.

| Since I have been on this site I have really grown as a model train collector. Case and point, when I first started, I got lots of trains from my friends in my Masonic lodge; we had a fund raiser so he gave me the train lot. When I got home, all I really wanted was TYCO's so I tossed all the wooden kits in the trash. Now I feel like a fool and wish I had known better. So every time I see some of these old wood kits, I think about the ones I tossed in the trash.

I took a pain pill last night before bed and all morning I have felt like I want to throw up... after reading this, I feel worse. I do not even want to know what you threw away or why. one rule of thumb.. One man's trash is another's treasure.
Next time, before you throw some old toy or train away, stop yourself and try to find one like it on line or offer it up for sale on eBay or something.
Someone threw this away in the trash:

It was found in a box, in pieces, sitting on top of the trash sitting next to the freight elevator inside the Saks office building in NYC. A delivery driver saw it and asked to make sure it was being tossed out before taking it. Since it was, he took it and listed it on eBay. Not knowing what it was, he listed it as "misc trains parts 7 pieces". I paid $155 shipped. I have since been offered $5,000. It is entirely scratchbuilt of brass. The only cast parts are the drivers. The rest is all hand tooled.
A few years ago, I acquired with a lot of trains a little metal tootsitoy-like metal fire truck. (can't remember the make now) I instinctively grabbed it and was about to throw it away. With my hand hovering over the garbage can, I stopped myself and decided to do a little research first on it. I saw one similar sold for ~$5 so I said, "Heck, lets list it...". It sold for $46.. That $ amount I do remember.

Thanks & good luck Ray!
It is much more difficult to restore than to start from scratch, but sometimes it is impossible to get these vintage wood kits not started yet. Those express reefers are really cool though!

@ siouxlake: I think is was to release heat rather than stink. They did not have AC back then. That car just sitting in the sun, I am sure built up a lot of heat.

Hey Sean, Question on the "payroll" car...... whats the length of that car? (I plan to model one, BUT I want to make it as close in wood as possible. THEN, I'm thinking of making one in metal car sides riveted. YES, I'm scratchbuilding BOTH of them!

The roof length is 55'. If you need more, I can, but it will be later today/evening.
Off to work now!
