Found an ad on craigslist for a model train lot about 10 minutes from my house. Went to go check it out yesterday and was impressed. I saw the stuff I specifically wanted from the pictures in the ad. I purchased an AHM Santa Fe GP18, AHM 7 11 boxcar, AHM Santa fe caboose, and an AHM signal bridge kit. all for $35! There were only 3 engines in his lot, an AHM C-liner and a bachmann f7. Right as i got home i had the gp18 torn apart cleaned, lubed, and reassembled within 30 minutes. It now runs great! everything was in its original box and had NEVER been used! the gp18 was stiff so it was torn down to clean and lube everything needed. The signal bridge kit was assembled to and it looks great!
here's the GP18 after all the internal work was completed.
the rare 7 11 boxcar
sorry for the blurry photo but heres the caboose
here's the completed signal bridge

I've said it before,.... I have a fascination with those AHM GP18's. I guess because they are fun to modify and kitbash. You can improve the operation of those locos by changing the worm in the trucks. There is a tutorial somewhere on this forum how to do it. You use a worm from an Atlas locomotive. The parts can be purchased new from Atlas. I also replace the motor with a KATO HM-5 or something similar. They are fun just like they are and if you want to keep that one all stock, thats cool. I noticed that the horn is still in place and the handrails not broken. Clean loco. Doesn't look like it was handled very much. I have one just like it: 100% original, in the box. I plan on keeping it that way.

SCVR66, I have the same GP18, and I noticed it had a bad wobble, do you have any ideas what could be wrong with it?

GG1, the axles are just Delrin so one or more may be bent.

They'd be a lot more fun to work on if the handrails weren't so bloody fragile, and the screw holes in the shell are so thin & brittle that they either strip or crack. I've given up trying to re-thread mine with CA, and I think I'll be replacing them entirely with Plastruct tubing.

GG-1, i'm sure nelson has got the right idea. I'll take a look at mine, unless you had a wheel axle problem I wouldnt know right off the bat. I'd be more than happy to look at mine to see where to trouble shoot any potential problems. Ncshortlines, This engine to my knowlidge was almost NEVER used! I tore it down to clean everything to prevent any further work needed. Nothing was borken on it, no loose handrails, horns were intact so nothign cosmetically was needed except for a new application of glue on the windows and light covers. The screws under the cab were a bit of a pain. The right side one was perfect no issues, the left side holds up but isn't very strong but thats alright with me.

I had a bad wobble with one of mine. Turns out it was a bad universal joint. You can run the engine without the shell and look at the drive mechanism. You can also disconnect one universal and run it to see if either one is bad.
