going through some photos from months ago is a lot of fun! I found a couple favorites to share on here
here's SCVR #5 in the shop for the first time since 2011 this was back in march, this was the start of the final completion only 2 months after this she was running down the tracks as you all know
here's my MDC 0-6-0T #9 many of you know ALL the problems i constantly had with her, at this photo back in april her frame had just been painted black, the rest of her parts were painted black a month later. Now she's in need of wiring work and to have new screws fitted to the frame. I have a voltage tester ti figure out the positive sides of the wheels so i plan on making one last run at getting her operational again if i pass i'll get it running again then probaby trade it off if all work fails it will be sold as is
back in march i sent in my bachmann 4-8-2 and 4-4-0 spectrum units for tender pcb replacement i came back from vacation in april only to open the box and find they sent me 2 new units, for the southern 4-4-0 i was fine with that but then i realized they switched my 4-8-2 for a 2-10-2. I was mad beyond belief cause that 4-8-2 had belonged to an original owner of my favorite train store and when he passed away they gave it to me. Very heartless of bachmann to not even ask for my permission, oh well. I've done the impossible and got a 2-10-2 to run on 18' radius corners, loosening the pilot wheel helped
here's when i bought a mantua booster from my favorite train store and then it was fully serviced and spending its first night in the shop
MORE TO COME SOON!

I buy, repair, and collect

i like that 2-10-2. i love big steam. i have a bachmann berk that runs fine on 18" curves. i'm beginning to think there's more that will run on 18" curves than won't. who knows, the next one i get might not.

The earlier production locomotives, steam or diesel, were made to negotiate 18 radius curves. Mind you, the body or coupler swing may look a bit grotesque to leading or trailing rollingstock, such as the RivaRossi/AHM 80' passenger cars, but they will do just fine.

The newer rollingstock, i.e. ready-to-run, may exhibit the need for broader curves, since truck-mounted couplers/or Talgo trucks, are disappearing.

The now IHC 80' passengercars kept the Talgo trucks... but higher-end of like cars will bind and derail on 18 radius or S-curves.

I have an Intermountain 100ton 50' grain hopper, fully detailed, that will derail on less-than 22" radius... That leaves it on a side-track, never to be in any of my trains. It's the CN rainbow-Demonstrator hopper... dust collector.

Rivarossi Big-Boys and Challengers? They are 18" radius curve friendly. Take care to notice if it has the deep flanges on the drivers. If so, do not run it on code 83 rail. Well, unless you wanna replace all the drivers with appropriate flanged wheel/axle sets.

Even Athearns DD40's do well on 18" radius curves because the two inner axles have quite a bit of side-to-side play... but remember, they also have truck-mounted coupler assemblies.

Keep up the passion! And dreaming about your favourite locomotive until you finally have it in your hands is always welcome! Remember to take a picture!

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I want the rainbow hopper so bad!! I don't care if I cant use it I'd love to have one though. And there's many locomotives out there that I really want. My favorite steam locomotive is the alco 2-8-2T, I've seen some in brass but theyre way to expensive! My favorite locos are logging ones not only geared but like the 2-8-2T and 2-6-2T. Realistically the engine I'm hunting for is a mantua 0-4-0 shifter in conrail paint. Ive been searching for years! The day i get that, I'll be the happiest guy ever!

I'm just shocked to see that #5 has a giant electric motor inside it.
