I picked up this set of six passenger cars that appear to have been built in the early 1950's at a flea market yesterday. If anyone can identify a manufacturer it would be appreciated...

I have not had time to clean or polish them yet...

By the looks of those cars, those might be Globe! They resemble Athearn strongly!

Plastic or metal bodies?

Not Globe, not even close; Herkimer/OK most likely.

I agree, The vista dome car has the clear plastic top with the painted silver window framing - that screams OK Streamliner product to me, as well as the wood bases and details... Nice complete set! Awesome find!

To follow in this theme of old timers... Here is my just purchased today Streamliner SOTW:

It is a Varney B&O Brass Streamlined Pacific with the original proper tender and a 7 car Varney wood & card stock B&O passenger set:

They came with this Pre-war Gilbert HO Hudson and 3 New Haven passenger car set:

So I guess my post was sort of a double whammy!

John,

I purchased it today on eBay here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271001054977?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Sale price: $124.01 + $33 s/h

Combined, I kind of stole them I guess you could say. I think there is a pre-war Varney Pacific with the aluminum tender in that lot too if I understand the description and believe the instruction sheet I see.

I have been hunting the tender for this engine for some time. It is the only one like it I will now have. From the photos, it looks like it is all wood. I have one friend that has one and that is the only other I have ever seen a photo of.

In all, I have 4 of the streamlined brass Varney locos. One is bronze and the molded details are slightly different. See the below link:

The seller's feeble attempt at describing the lot, is the main reason it went so cheap. There is no mention of Gilbert, American Flyer or Varney anywhere in the listing. I must compliment you in finding it.

Hi WAW47!

Thank you and you are 150% correct! Being that I am only going to be 42 next month and I was very poor growing up and had no access to nor did I know anyone else who had any vintage trains; I never knew these things existed until 6-7 years ago. It was not until I started selling trains on eBay back in 2005 that I first was exposed to some of these older models.

I joined a very good yahoo email discussion group VintageHO sometime back then and from there and just by selling these vintage pieces I began to pick up on what things were. I also joined yardbirdtrains yahoo group.

I also became very good at spotting what things were in photographs. For instance...

I have gotten good enough (with my corrected 20:650 vision in both eyes) to pick out items like this BRASS KEN KIDDER HOn3 0-4-0 "STEAM DUMMY" POWERED LOCOMOTIVE:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9977705@N05/sets/72157628492676797/

I found it within this listing's last photograph:

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120629140120_dummy.JPG

This was the listing (From Novmber 2011, I am surprised it can still be seen):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270849908043?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Needless to say, it was a very good buy too. I guess it is just a passion. I spot things that most people over look. I do not even look at descriptions anymore. I take and copy the photos, bring them into excel, blow them up and tally the values of what I see and come up with my max bids that way. I rarely shoot from the hip and guess at a value. Any more though I can pretty much do the bid max math in my head.

I feel pretty lucky Ken, in fact, very lucky. ...but then again, I see this auction house in the UK all the time on-line with some pretty good listings of trains. I have the same feelings about that site. You still seem to do pretty well Ken! You have some sweet pieces for sure!

http://www.vectis.co.uk/Page/ViewAuctionLots.aspx?AuctionId=26&DayNo=1&Section=399

http://www.1818auctioneers.co.uk/sales/84/2011-06-28/Monthly-Auction-of-Antiques--Collectables-including-Collectors-Sale-of-Toys---Models----Railwayana/17/

That always seem to have some pretty nice stuff posted as lots.

Ken,

I suppose you are right. I guess the grass always seems greener on the other side too. (from both sides I suppose)

You could not be more right Justin! At some point, I plan to restore the B&O Varney consist. I think as a set restored, they will look awesome!

Hope you and everyone else here have a good 4th of July! I am leaving for Niagara Falls with my wife and kids for 4 days today!
