Well, my old layout which I had posted about a few weeks ago has now been dismantled due to serious warping and track problems, so I will be posting updates in this topic about my new layout which is being planned. A few scenes like the hobo camp and house will remain mostly the same, while others will be moved around. I will post photos as soon as I have something to take a picture of on my layout as it is a bare board with roadbed right now. A new foam board will be added on top of the old plywood and the sawhorses will be replaced with table legs.

It's always nice to have a fresh start. My track laying skills seem to get better and better with every expansion/mini-layout I do...hopefully you'll notice the same thing

I look forward to seeing what you're doing on your new layout

Thanks! I have all the materials for my new layout's benchwork so hopefully no more sawhorses supporting it. Also I am sticking to sectional track for the curves this time.

The benchwork and sectional track should give you an excellent, sturdy base

Here is the track plan as drawn by me it's backwards due to the computer's camera but you can see the basic idea. I made it up but considering how basic it is someone else probably devised something very similar.

As soon as I can get the roadbed scraped off the old board I will glue the new foam to it. What is a good adhesive for this type of work?

Alas I has not thought about that! Maybe if I extend the short spur I could put a pikestuff enginehouse on it, I can put my bachmann sanding tower next to it, and then...

Now look what you did! You got me thinking again, just when I though I had a finished track plan!

Look up the montana rail link shop facilities in livingston, montana. I've been there a couple times, pretty much the best you can get in real railroad shop facilities, has a transfer table and turntable! The neat thing about the transfer table is that the cab is made of an old engine cab, around the shops they have some other neat things like a historic depot, inside the shops they even have an indoor basketball court for railroad employees. I hope to make a model of it someday, probably will make a track plan for the proposed model soon.

EM-1, you are making me jealous! Where do I get an engine like that! Is it a GP35?

Chessie,
First off, thats the Chessie System GM50, which is a GP40-2, that represents the 50th Aniversary of GM/EMD, AND the 150th Birthday of the B&O!

Believe it or not, thats a Athearn blue box kit, that I traded to get that I went into super detailing....That pilot plow? Is my OWN casting! I make them for all those Chessie AND Conrail modelers as they were used by both railroads! All the detail was then painted to match the real locomotive!

I must say, it runs well, and looks really good for a diesel! I too am a steam guy so.......But, I collect EVERYTHING from the B&O and WM days right up to the present day CSX!

History, of it, tho, only one locomotive was ever painted in gold, which the model is seen here. These are going for around $70.00 these days, UNLESS you find the collectors version, that comes with a gold Chessie System bay window caboose, which I also have along with the locomotive. The set, is going for around $200.00 as it was not made for sale by Athearn but one year!

I thought you would like that given the paint, roadname and well your railroad is Chessie too so.....

I do like diesels myself BUT how could I not run my nice cavalier set with the classic J-Class in front.

I have some other steam too but I am really looking to run the J since my previous layout could not handle it. Since the track on this layout will be the same radius track as the track included in the train set, it should run really well. And of course I should get a chessie steam special someday!

Speaking of diesels I recentley added a tyco alco 430 to my engine line-up. In the meantime the gas station you can see in pictures of my old layout has been dissasembled and repainted. It looks much better as before it was my first weathering attempt. Safe to say not even a Gas Station would have that much dirt. Since my gas station is a modern one the weathering and probably some graffiti would look more at home in the bathroom area. Anyway the benchwork is almost done and soon I can go to the hobby shop and get some more track. Thanks to SCVR66 I am still contemplating the addition of a shed and shop facilities. In the meantime though I need to get roads painted and such.

Benchwork construction is almost done - I need to get to the hardware store and hobby shop soon to get the rest of the track needed for the track plan I designed and the adhesive DaCheez suggested for the foam. The sawhorses are back but with a new frame so no more warping. I will post pictures as soon as there's some interesting layout work to take a picture of.

How thick is the plywood? If you're concerned about warping or sagging between sawhorses, you'd be well advised to use a frame as you mentioned. Even a couple 8-foot long 2x4's lengthwise would be very simple and inexpensive, but effective. Inset them about 8" from the sides, attach the wide side to the plywood. If you're considering a really permanent setup you can look up "L-girder" layout benchwork and get some ideas.

You base is literally the foundation of your railroad, so make sure it's sturdy. Nothing is more aggravating than warped and shifting track.

I like the track plan BTW... got some interesting possibilities there :)

I have not added any pictures of the layout but I figure I should do that now because I have been making a lot of progress:

I have repainted the gas station and added it to the layout. It looks much better than it did before.

The overview of the layout. Track is done but not wiring yet. This view shows the complete main street and trailer park.

Detail of the trailer park. Both trailers are scratchbuilt from balsa wood. I have painted some bachmann cars and placed them in the park.

The sign for the trailer park.

A fuel tank made from pieces of a signal bridge and an old tank car. Note the coiled up hose.

Looking up the hill to the trailer park and resedential area.

The old brick building on main street. I used clippings from a model railroad magazine to make a publishers office.

The Kroger grocery store on main street. It will be surrounded by a large parking lot. The coke machine is scratchbuilt. I detailed the inside with print outs of grocery store shelves.

This pretty much sums up the new work on my layout a lot of the buildings are recycled from my last layout.

Thanks for your interest.

More ballast on the layout, the whole up grade on the left side is ballasted. I added a switch tower and a pond and culvert under the track. Pictures will follow.

I spent this long weekend tearing down my current layout! Time to make way for the new one! Even when I barely started on friday which was just removing the locomotives and buildings I was like Oh S**T this is gonna be a lot of work! Even on my 4X8 there was around 20 engines 30 pieces of rolling stock and at least 50 diecast cars!! Not to mention all the buildings and parts i had unorganized around my shops Took 3 days but its all done now and i finished ripping up the old ballast and turf and swept it in the trash. Most of the ballast was still good to i have most of it in a bag. I will be switching colors to a typical mainline which is gray. I will use the brown logging color ballast for industries. I have 3 bags of new turf so i didn't need anymore plus most of what was on the layout was a year old!
I spent an hour cleaning the track and putting it into a box to save time. The engines and rolling stock moved to my storage racks where most of it was stored to begin with. Actual construction is likely not to start for about 2 weeks. I will be updating my website about this recent news please visit http://scvr.weebly.com/ for more info.

ChessieRR, hope your layout turns out well! As for mine stay tuned...

As soon as I can get the roadbed scraped off the old board I will glue the new foam to it. What is a good adhesive for this type of work?

To glue styrofoam sheets to plywood? Construction adhesive would probably be your best bet...PL Premium or something similar...

you have to buy adhesive made expressly for foam. usually blue

construction adhesive has solvents which will dissolve the foam

The PL Premium I mentioned is safe for foam, but you do have to be careful with certain adhesives

Chessie,
Thats looking REALLY good!

I can't wait to see what others you might have in that when its al most completed!

The details on the tank tower looks AWESOME, along with the sign you made as well. And the gas station was re-painted?

All looks really good!

Thanks! Yep, I repainted the gas station. It had a horrible weathering job (one of my first!) done on it so the only way was a repaint: Here is before:
I dug everything out of the old plaster parking lot and repainted it. The old decals had to go sadly but I didn't have many on there. The gas station now has a logo on the wall, signs in the windows, a desk, and a checker tile floor.

The tank car that is the water tank came in my first model train set, an old life like. I never liked the paint so I sprayed it silver and added details. Still needs a ladder though.
