My B&O 0-4-0 Teakettle is driving me nuts with its erratic running! That gave me the idea of making it a 2-4-2 for somewhat better stability. Is it possible to do this? What pilot wheel and trailing wheel assemblies could i use? I like the logging design better with non covered wheels.

It can be done. Sean aka Mustang_N_Trains used Athearn Gensis Mikado pilot/trailing trucks.

The frame will have to be short for sure. I say look out for the MDC pilot/lead wheel sets and frames on eBay. The old-timer series might work.

| Lot of work for an engine that will eventually strip it's drive gear on the axle with no real simple fix. I would look at another chassis for it of some sort.

To me it's worth it I don't run my steamers into the ground I treat them with detailed care. Btw the teakettle has a different gear assembly than the docksider. The teakettle has a bunch of little gears while the docksider only has one main gear. I've never heard any reported problems with the teakettle

In cases such as these, I merely make my own pilot and or trailing truck, "frame" as to have whatever length is needed to fit....
Brass works well as its all solder construction.....
I'd say, spoked pilot and trailing truck wheelsets would look GREAT on an old Teakettle!
I say tho, if you don't find anything for the trucks, let me know, I have a Teakettle and can make up a set of frames to hold the wheel sets from brass, for $5.00 plus shipping!
