I've been wondering a for a while if 3mm warm white LED's were available at a reasonable price, because about 4 years ago all I could find was the cool blue/white. I bought 100 of them, and while it was a good deal they just don't look good as headlights, and tinting them makes them look sickly.
I did a search and found this seller had the best deals that included the dropping resistors:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160437958511
Be sure to specify the 470 ohm resistors for 12 volts, because there's a 100 ohm option. He also has them pre-wired, for those who want less soldering:

They took about 11 days to arrive from China, and they are much better than the blue white. They're not as warm as an incandescent bulb, but close enough.

100 bulbs for $7? That sounds like an excellent deal. You could light a whole city with that! I'll have to look in to these when I start detailing my buildings. Thanks for posting

It is a good deal, Cheez. You can get 100 of them for a lot less from other sellers, but you'd have to supply your own resistors.
Here are the flat-top ones I posted to Ron's snowplow thread, which could be used as lenses.

These auction links will expire of course, so keep searching eBay, and let us know if new or better deals pop up.

I measured the headlight hole on an Athearn F7 and it's about 4mm. Those flat-tops would be nearly perfect
Just looking at those auctions gives me all sorts of ideas!

Nelson, I have seen these on Ebay quite a bit and sadly my handicap is I don't have a paypal account and therefore won't allow me to get the 2MM sizes in multicolor I need for my signal building for my layout so.....Till I get a paypal account anyway...)
But these look like you have a good deal on the warm white lights for steamers I presume?
I think the bright white ones look "OK" for a diesel but are a bit to "blue" but aren't to to bad for a diesel otherwise......

John,
The warm white are fine for diesels, too, as I found the blue-white to look funny even in them. There are no doubt variations in different productions, so some may have a bluer cast than others. I was looking at the 2mm's, and they have at least a 3mm package with a 2mm lens extension.
I may by a bunch of tiny surface mount LED's to illuminate the keypad on a multi-band radio, and they may come in handy for certain applications. Harder to work with, of course.
