my mdc 0-6-0t has never been the way i like. First when i got it from a friend at a train show its performence was really bad. I used labelle lubricant to perk it right up AND once i lubed it everywhere it ran well. Its cosmetic appearance never looked good though, it had a mantua boiler front which doesn't bother me. Also the frame was worn and greasy so yesterday i completly stripped my 0-6-0T down to the frame and got to work. Today i painted the frame and gear cover plate black. I placed the motor back on the frame and before putting the gear cover plate back on i installed the wheels/rods. the wiring was all connected again and i put the cylinders back on and alligned all the rods and put it on the track to test it and nothing happened. I tried nudging it, nothing happened. The engine was dead cold. It was running fine when i disassembled it to repair. The wheels were cleaned, the wiring is weird. 2 wires lead from the motor, one goes to the top of the motor and another leads down to a pickup plate that is screwed down to touch the wheels. I screwed the plate and wire with it as it used to be so i didn't alter anything. I'm totaly lost, i did nothing but dissaembled the loco back to a kit form like it used to be when made. Then i painted the frame cleaned the drive wheels and reassembled it. It should've worked. Can anyone help me out please? I'm confused cause nothing was changed at all.

Try flipping the drivers over... you may have them reversed, so the insulated wheels aren't on the wiper side.

If you put power directly to the motor, does it run?
Did you paint the axle bearing channels?

I like all three questions here! Check to make sure the insulated wheels are on the same side as the brush pad and make sure your bearing channels are not painted. Also make sure the surface area under the motor is bare metal to allow for a complete electrical contact path of the non-insulated wheels to the frame - then frame to motor.

Thank you nickelplate!! It works again! You wouldn't happen to know why my tyco Plymouth switcher aint running anymore would you? All I did was give it a new lower left gear from a spare parts tyco alco. The old gears teeth were crunched and some had broken off so with a new gear it don't move. Before I removed the old gear it worked. I repair a lot of engines but instead of fiddling with it guessing what the problem is I came here. I'm not stupid enough to use steel wool on track. I use a special block called sandflex that cleans rust and chrome plated fixtures. It cleaned old brass piping and handrails that had either rust or paint on them. It's a great tool! I have 2 for loco wheels on older engines at least I use a mini wire brush for heavily dirty wheels but new engines just a tissue folded and depending on steam or diesel either the front trucks off getting power an other trucks being cleaned vice versa. For steamers one of the drive wheels has to be off in order to power the engine unless Tender pick up of tender driven

No problem. Putting wheels in backwards is the easiest mistake to make, so that was first on my list.
I'm not sure about the MDT, tho. I assume it's a PT drive, right? That could be you're problem right there.
(Before anyone gets their hackles up, that was in sarcasm quotes... sort of. )
You can't reverse the wheels on a PT power truck, so you may have broken the wire to the brush retainer, or maybe a brush retainer popped loose? Just guessing. Photos would help. As OTT asked, does it still run with current directly applied to the motor?

I never would've guessed. And yes PT. It ran well before I replaced the gear but it wouldn't move cause of te crunched old gear but yeah I lubed the motor to it and it ran fine before I think I know where the problem is I just gotta find it. My project list is huge!! Ive got so many rebuilds and repairs to do I barely get around to running Nything.
