The MTH HO scale box car :

* Having received one for a birthday present I noticed some changes from what was becoming standard new car construction for this scale. MTH has returned to what, to me is a more practical way of producing detailed box cars. Since Varney and others back in the 1950, even until now, have been separately casting and mounting details like ladders, break operating rods, and platforms on the sides of the box cars. The sight of cars running around layouts without these details has become commonplace. The cost of replacing these items and there aviability has changed for the worse.
* Now separate casting for these parts do give a better look to the cars when everything is there. Newer cast in details come visually close to these. Especially when viewed in a normal way, on a layout siding, or on a made up train running by.
* MTH has cast on the ladders, hand and foot loops, break operating rods, break operators platform, and break inner wheel housing. Only the break operating wheel, and sliding doors are separate castings. Very little is lost visually. The way MTH has done the sliding door, with the needed castings that accomplish the slide action, inside and out of sight, is great. The external details are crisp and thin you would think a moving door was not a part of this model. This is one very well done feature of this box car.
* On the roof, the walkway is a separate casting. This is thinner and stronger then on other models, as is the overall construction of the entire box, roof, sides, ends, and doors.
* Beneath, the under floor detail is exquisite. All appliances, piping, rods, levers, and connectors appear to be in one added on casting. The coupler pocket covers are screw mounted and should last a long time. The couplers supplied are a operating knuckle coupler, of a Kadee type. The trucks are plastic frame with metal wheels. These trucks are extremely free rolling. There cast in detail, fine.
