This was in my local newspaper a few months ago(i just found it again) PRR 1223 coming down South Water Street in Lancaster City Pennsylvania circa 1966 pulling a passenger train with Santa on board. She was operated by the Strasburg Railroad at the time.Built in 1905,it is the only 4-4-0 of her class in exhistance today. She remained in service till 1989 when thinning firebox walls forced her into retirement. She now sits proudly on display at The Railroad Museum Of Pa in Strasburg. Rode behind this loco may times in the 1980's.

cool! i still dont't see why they took her out of service, i mean come on strasburg could give it newer thicker firebox sheets. They've done bigger work than that!

svvr66 the loco was leased to the strasburg from the museum, when the lease was up and the loco needed work the museum decided not to renew the contract and it went across the street to its new home. Loco 7002 is also there opposite 1223.

I heard somewhere that the reason they don't run the PRR steamers is because they would rather preserve them for future generations rather than wear them out. Which sounds like a load of crap to me. This doesn't stop UP from running their steam program all over the place.

I've seen those 1223 street running pictures on RailPictures. It is surreal to see, like a scene out of Inception. It's hard to believe it was once common practice.
Here's a shot of the Empire State Express coming through Syracuse in 1905.

And a NYC freight running down "Death Avenue" in Manhattan, before they were forced to lay the tracks below ground. The small tank engine is dressed up in a boxcab shroud so as not to scare the horses, and you can see another street running freight crossing the next block in the background.

As to 1223, I suspect belt tightening may have more to do with it being relegated to a display. I've been on excursions behind her myself.

To bad the 2-10-2 won't run. It's to slow to for their excursion use and she also has cut pistons. I still think they should restore her but not travel as far as 844. Question 7002 didn't have firebox thinning why did she leave the lease

Sadly also in 1989 7002 was retired due to the same thinning firebox wall problems. In reality 7002 is loco 8063 as the real 7002 was scrapped in 1935.

More cool internet photos of 1223.
At Strasburg Pennsylvania in August 1963 with excited kids.
At downtown Lancaster Pennsylvania during a Santa fan trip in November 1966.
Behind engine 7002 in double header paradise near Haverford Pennsylvania.

Where’s the Walmart? What’s that odd corner store, why that looks like a privately owned business. Ugh, I bet they even close on Sundays! Seriously, lovely photo, sorry it’s all gone.
