I sold a set of the DC comics cars and the buyer wanted me to convert them back to original from modified to body mount Kadees and Athearn trucks.
I figured the easiest way to do that was to rob some other cars of the frame and just swap them out, but even though I grabbed all brown box stuff they didn't quite directly swap.
What I found was the DC series were all Made In USA cars on the frames. The ends of the shell at the steps are a tad tighter and frames "Made In Hong Kong" would not fit - but one I had that was older and had the 60s style Tyco name on it, did slip right in. I forget where it was made and it's on it's way to Australia now, but it might be off the blue CP Rail boxcar.
The Hong Kong frames I had to sand a bit on the outside of both ends, and file down the pin holding the weight a bit, to get them to slip in - and even then one was still real tight on one end.
So technically the cars still aren't 100% correct to original - but I did it this way as I wasn't sure what was done to the bolsters to use screw-on trucks, and one frame was broken anyways right through the bolster, the truck pulled off when I tried to ease the frame out.
What's strange to me is the DC series were all marked, the last owner bought them in 1979 - I figured by then all Tyco production was overseas? But I know Mantua sold some of these cars about that time as well; could there have been two sets of tooling out there?
