i've talked a lot about my dads old mantua 0-4-0 shifter that he gave me along with his collection of tyco trains. It was old, worn out, dirty, paint chipped, missing cab and smokebox door front and not much of it was good i spent 2 years just taking it apart and finding more info on it, now i know all about them and have spent 2 years rebuilding it, 2010 i really got started, painting the boiler and frame. But that was it. 2011 i tried to get her done but the motor wires broke and caused more problems with held up her restoration. this year (2012) i told myself i'd finish her, but first i had some huge problems: the wheel quartering was off on the drive geared wheel, and i was missing some brass spacers which seperate the drive rod from the main rod. Also, the tender frame got a screw stuck in it while i tried removing it, it snapped in half rendering me with the locomotive once again in a million pieces. It all changed yesterday when i went to the train show in bakersfield and stumbled upon a parts box and found a mantua 0-4-0 boiler and tender shell and frame (complete tender basically) the tender was missing the trucks but i rebuilt my originals. Anyways i spent all day today painting the spare boiler even though i dont need it , the tender frame and shell as well as installing the newly rebuilt tender wheels and trucks which are original and installing the fake tender light and handrails which i pulled off her original tender which was missing its steps thats why i decided to use this newer shell cause it had all the steps, i had to paint over the pennsylvania lettering and make it undecorated. After all that the tender is finally 100% rebuilt with a new frame, shell, rebuilt wheel and trucks, new knuckle coupler, fake tender light, and original handrails. A huge milestone after a huge string of problems. now she is 75% complete and only needs new drive wheels and rods, i hope to get a parts supplier engine only on ebay soon.
it looks shinier and cleaner in person i'm proud though
the first time the tender's been rejoined with the engine since 2009! i put the original drive wheels back on just for the photos today, they will be replaced in a few weeks.
rear view of the newly rebuilt tender and ol #5 I hope to finish her within 2 months plenty of time to get the wheels and rods, finally after all the setbacks she can finally begin to come back together

I liiiike restoration projects. You probably already know this and maybe someone has mentioned this before: www.yardbirdtrains.com might have the side/main rods and hardware you need. Give Dan a phone call. Are you replacing the wheels because of the quartering problem? Aren't you the person on this forum that is concentrating on acquiring more steam locomotives? A good investment would be a Quartering Jig. Northwest Short line, NWSL, has them. Buying another used pair of wheels can likely have quartering problems. I have a quartering jig, used it a couple of times. A necessity for the steam restorer if you ask me.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Is thevalve gear easy to install? Are there any problems with it?

Piece o' cake...just remember the eccentric goes on just left of center and don't kink the linkages...

for now i'd much prefer the original style running gear, its simpler. I love valve gear but theres not many "original" parts still on her just the boiler, frame, and some pieces on the tender. everything else i've had no choice but to replace

Very nice! Funny how we can spend time and money on a "silly" little engine that cost under $20! Back in 1963 I received a Tyco train set with a B & O shifter. My goal is to recreate the set piece by piece. Shifters can always be found on ebay (I don't make it to train shows) ,often pretty cheap, so that is a good way to get parts. I picked up an old one (1950's) with full valve gear for under $17. I picked up another one (1960's) for about $10 and will combine the best parts. I am looking for one with smoke to finish up. I will post when done. I also got a copy of an old MR from 1950 with a 3 page detailing article - that could take years! Good to see I am not alone in my "shifter insanity"!

I know right! But this shifter has barely costed me anything to rebuild. I do all work myself on old engines especially mantuAs cause their my favorite. I painted everything for free and the new tender I got and boiler were on $1 each! I'm currently winning a bid on a parts supplier early mantua 0-4-0 shifter. I only need the rods so I'm gonna sell the boiler to a friend on this forum and keep everything else as a spare parts. I hope I win the bid cause I need the wheels and rods so bad but like I've said so far only $2 spent rebuilding her but dozens of hours!! No joke. Now that the engine is in the shape I want her in all thTs needed is for me to win my current parts engine bid and get ol #5 on the rails forthe first time since the 70s! Of course if I win the bid the total fund o money I've spent will go up but not by much if I do win the total will be around $12! And I love shifters, if I were looking for one to restore or buy and tune up I'd have so many but I only buy an egine from eBay almost every month
