Parts are kind of hard to find so I was wondering in anyone had a junker laying around that they would be willing to sell.

Thanks guys.

I opened her up and noticed that the motor was installed incorrectly. The motor appears to be missing a brush and the grounding cable. Couldn't get the motor going. If someone has an extra motor, let me know. For now, looks like I am going to have a very nice looking dummy engine.

* Take a good look at the gear on the driven axel. Almost all are cracked. Even the ones with a slight crack once operated will crack open and seize the drive.
This is the most common problem with this loco, and the 0-6-0 switcher, and the pacific.

Ray,

If the drive gear is cracked I have had some success with pulling the wheels out and pouring plastic cement(strong stuff the kind that melts the plastic) in the axle and putting the other wheel back in. Then wipe off any glue that squeezed out and let dry over night re assemble and see how she goes.

I just got done installing a water softener today and I think next time I have to repair a cracked gear I am going to try PVC cement.

Thanks everyone. The gears appear to be ok. Seems like getting this guy to run might be harder than I thought. I will just have to push it back on the workbench.

What parts do you need. I have a parts loco. It has a bad gear. Maybe something there you could use. I'll check the motor and see if it is Ok.
* Yes I do have a good motor.

* The point of my last post was to say I have a spare motor. I also own a 0-4-2 that runs. My parts loco is for me, less the motor if you need it. The other parts I will hold on to. Dont you know what parts you need.

Think I'm going to repower mine.

These ran badly but I don't remember why, anybody?

Certainly pickup on the trailing truck would help.

Gareth , I have had few problems with the Athearn motor. They like all may need brushes, cleaning and lube. My problems have almost always been split gears. That snap together gear tower isn't the best of designs either. Here it is hard to find a 0-4-2 where body attaches to the frame. It would seem that most people here couldn't remove the body without breaking off the pieces needed to attach the body. A good one is one where only 1 is broken off. On the two bodies I have one has all three broken off . The other has 1 broken off.

Hey Frank:

Mine has both tab enclosures broken off. I sold my one cracked one in original box to Nelson. I reasoned since I'm modding mine I'd feel less guilty about chopping an already broken one....

Do you have any Steamers Frank in stock form that have electrical pic-up in pilot or trailing truck?
