Not my project but, it's interesting. TYCO steam loco with a converted tender drive from an Athearn switcher. Here's the start of it. The tender has to be lengthened accommodate the switcher frame.

I picked up a Tyco with what I think is an Athearn drive similar to the photo but the tender did not have to be lengthened. I'll post a couple of pics tomorrow.

The standard retrofit is to use the Bachmann 44 Tonner chassis, which may be what's under yours, ER. The steel wheels on the Athearn chassis will definitely provide better traction, though.

I stand corrected, I looked last night and found the tender was lengthened to accomodate the Athearn drive. The draw bar needs work, it also looks like a standard Tyco / Mantua long haul tender might fit over the Athearn drive. Comparing them side by side it looks close.
