Took a while for everything to arrive, but I finally got all the parts in hand this week to upgrade my Great Northern Bachmann GP40...
BEFORE:

AFTER:

Newer can motor courtesy Shaygetz, and upgraded trucks from GraftonTerminal. Thank you, gentlemen!
The can motor is a drop-in fit, however it does not fully seat in the chassis owing to the shaft bushings being a different size. Silicone to the rescue! I used some sparing silicone to mount and insulate it as shown, and it works like a charm. Very easy installation, aside from installing the joint couplings on the shafts, which was surprisingly tough. Also have to make sure the motor is aligned perfectly level... kind of an eyeballing affair, but it will bind if it's not correct, so it either works or it doesn't.
Performance is MUCH improved, but the low gearing doesn't make this a speed demon by any means. And it's still loud, but I like it. Actually the new motor is silent, so everythign else is gear chatter.... I'll have to try some of Nelson's suggestions there.
At any rate, I think the newer trucks are a big improvemen in looks, and it definitely has personality now... easily one of my favorite "Train Show Junk" finds ever.
Thanks again to all who helped out!

Wowzers, those truck sideframes made a real big difference didn't they? You're very welcome - I'm glad to help.

Tony, the detail is better on the later sideframes.
I guess we discussed it before, but now all of the noise comes from the shafts and gearing, and a lot can be eliminated by tossing the couplings and substituting silicone fuel line tubing. I also shimmed the square plastic bearings with thin styrene at the bottom of their slots to keep them from rattling, since the fit's a little loose. If it has the metal worms, it should be pretty quiet after that. The plastic worms on the AHM FT's were noisy, probably from the parting lines running right down the center.

Actually I meant to ask Kris that. I'm pretty sure they did, but on close inspection they are actually different, as if they came from different units. Would like to know which, so I know what to look for in the future. The GP30 is another favorite of mine that can benefit from an upgrade, as can the BQ23-7.

You know, I completely forgot about this thread until last night.
Tony, your sideframes came from a Bachmann CP Rail F9 of late 80s vintage.
I went yard-sale-ing Saturday morning and scored a complete Bachmann CN freight set of early to mid 70s vintage. Has a Ph1 GP40 in CN, works pretty well actually. Also came with a CN three dome tank car, CN newspaper title 50' plugdoor box, CN 40' box with opening doors, CN 40' reefer with no markings except a picture of a cow on the side showing the different cuts of meat, and lastly a CN caboose. Nice find.
Anyway, looking thru my junk box I found a set of later model sideframes from an old F9 (I think). They went right on the GP40 with no modifications and look pretty decent.

Do the newspaper and cow cars look anything like the ones here?

Couldn't you fitthe BQ23-7 to the newer can motor and flywheel drive B23-7 drive? I think it be an almost snap on fit!
(I myself) find that Athearn frames work well too as I only have so many of the decent flywheel drive Bachmann units......BOTH my BQ23-7's are on Athearn UboatB unit frames.......

well the old saying goes " if you wait long enough you will get answers to everything in due time" I went to my "graveyard, waiting for resurrection day" shelves and found a Bachmn b23-7 with the Presidential seal on it. It had the same frame , except the top half had dissintegrated and I couldn't find any diagrams on Ho seeker or Bachman web sites to help with the wiring. I managed to fire it up and it is nois as all outdoors. I am going to use the silicone trick as the motor mounting was baffling to me. I definetly wil use Nelsons advice about the shims and fuel line. this one has metal worns so I should come out OK. All I have to do is reinvent some sort of top frame.
