This should interest anyone who buys stuff made in China who doesn't want to look around for stuff made by their countrymen or neighbours.

I think it is a mixed bag. Especially in an earlier time, goods made in China were very cheap and poorly made. That still may be the case for lots of items but there are incredibly high quality products made there as well. I think a lot of the products that come here very poorly made that way because the American (or Canadian) company that imported them requested to have them made as cheaply as possible. If companies want high quality products made in China they can get that too, it just costs more. There are some fantastic optics coming out of China as well as other high tech goods. The computer I'm writing this on was made in China and it is state-of-the-art high tech. It works flawlessly. Crap can be made in any country. I blame companies that purposefully order and accept poorly made goods just so they can make a greater profit.

Hey CL:
Well, I suggest reading the book, cause he is/was "boots on the ground" as we used to say in the Army. I read an excerpt and was impressed. Jason Shron set up a new factory for Rapido there and he has had a hell of a time getting the final product he wants. Trust me he's not looking to get anything other than perfect.
The fact that Chevy once made louse quality cars* doesn't mean what this guy wrote about the cultural divide isn't true. He has first hand knowledge and thats worth something I think.

* = In fairness to Chevy my company Air York just retired two Chevy Mini-vans with over 600,000km's each on them.

Companies don't wanna have to deal with EPA and other laws. China is one of the most polluted countries right next to Japan. American made stuff as I hate to say this, is worse than foriegn made goods. I have own a Honda and was a 2006. The american made midsize cars compared are trash. Its a game out there so you'll buy a Ford, GM, or Chrysler product every so often. Its sad to see so much imported stuff.

Justin you realize the VAST majority of Honda cars sold in the US are made in Ohio or Alabama right? I'll won't hide the fact the parent company is still Japanese, but they keep a lot of jobs on US soil. Also many American cars have made huge inroads with customers. The Chevy Cruze & Ford Fusion come to mind. My parents bought a Cruze and coming from someone who's owned a few imports (mostly Hondas). Its DAMN good. Not a perfect car by any means, but its definitely closing the gap. There are a bunch of ways to look at this, we could toss numbers back and forth all day when it comes to cars. But American car companies are on the move right now.
Also all this manufacturing in China is having the side effect of boosting the cost/standard of living. I read two articles recently where some manufacturing is actually coming back to the US. I doubt it will ever even touch what it once was, in fact its just a trickle effect right now. But its a interesting read. http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2012/01/19/heres-why-american-manufacturing-will-make-a-come.aspx (if you bored you can search google for other articles)

I drive a 2011 Accord Coupe and on the title, it says made in America. That being said, mybrother just got a 2012 Taurus and I absolutely love the car as well. Ford in particular is making a comeback and the Fusion gets high marks in reliability. Who wold have thought just 10 years ago that a V-6 Mustang would put out 300hp while getting 26 miles per gallon? It seems that American companies are finally starting to wake up and produce a decent automobile. china is just the latest stop in the cheap labor/ imports market. With their standard of living on the rise companies are already looking elsewhere to produce their product. Just a sign of the times I guess.

The " rising tide which lifts all boats " economy in China is creating a growing middle class that wants the same things we want- retail goodies that their parents could not even dream of. Recently a Ford F150 "clone" was shown on the Foxnews website that even had a big blue oval logo in the middle of the front grill! China is now losing low-end manufacturing jobs to places like....Vietnam!
One thing I wonder about is, since China had steam railroading until the 1990s, and a long tradition of railroading before that, aren't there just a few model railroaders in China right now????
Imagine all the train manufacturers being right there in-country, just like it used to be here in America!!!!!
