one of the first engines i ever got as a little kid was a bachmann f7 or f9, for the last 10 years ive had it sit out of service on my collection shelf, only the light worked on it when put on the track. I've had similar problems with tyco alcos, and corrected them, but their totaly different then the f7. What type of problem could it be, i'm a steamer restorer, i've restored some old tyco and mantua diesels but cause i'm familiar with them. Anybody have an exploded diagram sheet of it? I've stripped the rear power truck from the frame, its all in pieces now, so i need a reference to where everything goes, i forgot to take photo references. Since it's one of my first ever engines i feel it deserves to run again like my dads old 60s tyco alcos.
Here's where it stands as of now any tips?

Your first engine. Yeah, it deserves to run. I can't find a reference diagram. Most likely it's going to be bad contacts, why it didn't run. Somebody here has a photo or something.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

well not my first engine but one of my first close to it, my first was an ihc mehano ATSF 2-6-0 from the zenith limited set
Here she is now, still with me still 100% smooth running and regularly maintained. she now wheres a vanderbilt tender to resemble an sp 2-6-0, SP is my favorite railroad and vanderbilt tenders are my favorite, i still have #7809s original oil bunker tender, its just not used, also i have all the rolling stock from the set. She's the only engine that has been continuously running since my brother and i were very little, which means #7809 has been running for 19 years!! Shes not as pretty as she used to be and is missing some cosmetic parts but to have your first ever engine still running and with you its amazing, we've had it since 1993, i was born in 1996, this was my brothers since i wasnt born yet, but with my brother at college and me in high school i maintain all the engines and continously buy more, fix more, and expand my layout this engine started it all.
anybody got some spare parts for a mehano 2-6-0? i need 1 number plate and some of the piping along the side.

That's a real gem , your 2-6-0.

I just emailed a copy of the parts diagram for that engine to some folks on the forum this morning.
The piping along the side (handrails) can be made easily from brass or steel wire from a hobby shop. The chances of finding original ones are slim unless you can find a parts loco at a train show. Maybe someone has the same loco, I think Romcat does, and they can tell you the diameter of the wire.
My diagram says the(right side) name plate is part number:P522-027 (I think that's the part you are talking about.)
By the way, take a look at the AHM/Rivarossi section of this forum, the 2-6-0 thread.
There is someone that claims to have surplus stock parts for these locos. I'll look for the address.

Of course, your loco is fine the way it is.

This is from a thread a year ago, posted by Eaglerock109:
Another guy, B&J train parts and repair, bought the parts inventory from IHC, no web site but the email address is
PARTS-4-TRAINS@HOTMAIL.COM, they're phone number is 757-393-6028

By the way, I noticed the LARGE backshop on your layout. I guess you've seen the Southern Railway backshop at Spencer, NC?

One more thing. I have that same Bachmann F9. I can dig it up and post photos of the power truck with the gears still in place. It's packed away in a box, could be a few days before I can dig it out.

Whew, I'll stop talking for now.

and about the shop, its a walthers cornerstone shop, its huge! 18 inches long and 9 inches wide. I store 6 locomotives in there, all steam. 2 mantuas, 2 new roundhouse 2-6-0s and a rivarossi 0-6-0T and a life-like 0-4-0. I built it a month ago, this shop in this photo is the first one i built which houses the ihc 2-6-0 #7809, mdc 0-6-0T, and the boiler/frame of a mantua 0-4-0, i built it simply to store my favorite engines in one place.

Wow, that is so similar to Tyco PT and Aurora slotcar motor set ups.
Replacing the entire power truck would still be original like.

This is a rough guess where the gears went. The positions should be close. The drive axles could be figured out if the gears are off centered and they only line up one way.
The wires I think would be a pos, a neg and one to the light. It might run backwards at first.
Good luck.

With AlcoF's side view schematic and this blurry photo, you should be able to reassemble your power truck.

I have one of those in Canadian National livery that I got 5 years ago for $25 with an Athearn New Haven caboose.Mine still runs excellent, much like your's apparently does. Very good locos, in my experience, IHC's.

Yes, it's an old thread, but it was only 6 down from the top as of posting...

I just finished rebuilding the motor of an identical locomotive. This one was bought a number of years ago as not working (seized solid) as a source of spare parts for my first Santa Fe F9 which I've had since 1994, which suffered from split gears (both of the gears closest to the wheelsets).

I managed to get the motor spinning again on the loco the same day I bought it (even that was a number of years ago now, around 2013!), but it was always slow to get going and not very powerful unless at almost full throttle. After finally taking the motor apart today, there was so much sticky gunk (old grease?) inside the motor casing it was a wonder it ran at all. After pulling apart and rebuilding the motor, it now outruns my trusty old F9, and the light still works!

Both locos still take about 4 volts before they stop buzzing and actually start to move though, but I think it's just the way they are - my Life-Like GP38-2 has an almost identical pancake motor and does the same thing, and was bought brand new in 2010.

The only thing I have left to do after giving this motor a good clean and some oil is source some of the aforementioned gears, but I don't like my chances seeing that Bachmann no longer sells spare parts for these locos, so it will have to click away with the single split gear driving the rear axle (the other gear wasn't just split, it also had a broken tooth and was binned years ago). Unfortunately, the Bachmann gears are not interchangeable with the Life-Like ones so I can't borrow those either.

I recently bought a Bachmann F9 which featured in the LOTW thread a few weeks ago, after taking it apart to check the power truck (which was seemingly dead) I noticed that despite the loco being almost brand new internally, the leading reduction gear (next to inner wheelset) is starting to split from the small inner gear. I really wish I could find somewhere who had these, as 18/8-tooth gears are apparently impossible to source. Looks like I now have three F-units and only three good gears out of six.

If anyone wants the dimensions of these infamous gears, the 18T diameter is 9mm (1mm thick), 8T is 4mm (2mm thick) and the spindle is the standard toy can motor size (not the smaller one used in the Bachmann/PT motors).

Also, one difference between this cheaper model and the more common chromed Santa Fe models: The weight at the rear is completely missing, as is the screw hole for it.

The OP's loco is an F7, as shown by the lack of a grill between the driver's door and the first porthole, the four small fans on the roof and the solid valance under the SANTA FE lettering.
