Was the 1980 Tyco 0-8-0 any good? They look right for a project I have in mind but I'm not sure where 1980 was in the quality game. Were these plastic? Metal? Good runners, poor runners?

The Tyco 0-8-0 ran like any other Tyco power torque engine. The boiler and so on is plastc. They run good once cleaned up and lube in there mechanical aspects. The 0-8-0's have a plastic tender frame as well. The boilers/drivers frame is metal and the motor's block is metal as well.

"The Tyco 0-8-0 ran like any other Tyco power torque engine."
So in other words they don't run at all.
I know PTs can run sometimes, I just get sick of nudging them around the track. I never seem to have good luck with them. I'm looking for something that looks like this:

The tycos seems reasonably close but I'd prefer something in a metal frame that runs well. Anyone have any other suggestions that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

No PT in the 1980 Alco 0-8-0.

I'd buy one used and remotor.... Helix Humper?
How about an IHC 0-8-0? Nelson (Nickleplate) has had some good successes with IHC units.

There's also the USRA 0-8-0 from P2K but they tend to be pricey...

Hmm, so is this a tyco with a PT or really a Mantua?

Its a PT CamdenLine. All PT successfully run very good and few like new and quite! Just need patentence and lubing and cleaning skills.

| I didnt know much about cleaning and libing a PT till I saw Brianstyco videos . He has them posted on this site and youtube. Helped me greatly on getting my "fleet" of them running again. The 2-8-0 Royal Blue I just got you barely know its running.

Thanks for the feedback. I have gotten some PT engines to run decent, jut not what I'm looking for on this one. I'll keep my eyes open at shows for a mantua or IHC 0-6-0. I think there are some shows coming up in my area. Could be an interesting project. My layout is all modern diesel but having one steam locomotive around would be interesting.

I have to say, I'd try an IHC 0-8-0 for that project as they are close to the picture of the real thing you pictured!

Yeah, don't know why I typed 0-6-0. Must have been an off day. I was looking at 0-6-0's that day as well.

I second the recommendation for the IHC / Mehano 0-8-0, which looks good because it uses the same boiler tooling as the Tyco, but with a decent drive. Another possibility is the Rivarossi IHB 0-8-0, since the prototype has a large boiler, tho not as big as the IHB.
