While "running the tables" at Timonium, MD show this weekend, I found a plat of goodies that the guy knew what he had. Here's one you don't see every day, a Marx Wabash caboose, very rare, last one I Watch'ed on Ebay went for $85 abouts. Yikes! This's guys price was more reasonable at $65, but I had other cars to hostle. A bit rich for me right now.
I've got the other two versions, the yellow and the red, not sure how many other variations there are of this dual cupola/bay window style there are, but I like it. Maybe someday I'll have the Tri-fecta.

| AMC, It looks like Marx, but it is an American Flyer Pikemaster caboose made in 1961-1962.

Ok, it has the Marx trucks ( push-on truck onto metal pin ), but you're right, there is no Marx molded stamp, it had been removed, so maybe AF bought them from Marx. Come to think of it, the other two I have also have the Marx mark missing. But they're DEFINITELY of Marx design, only Marx did their trucks that way. Thanks for sharing that, Waw.

Jerry, the shells are different. American Flyer bay window cabooses have a cupola. Marx bay window cabooses do not.

Marx or Sakai was making these for Gilbert. This wasn't the only marx type cars made for gilbert. Sakai also later released HO cars including X gilbert car under there name. Also Varney made cars for Gilbert.

| Busss, the RI caboose you mention was produced by Marx. Gilbert never made a RI caboose in HO.

There is no evidence that Sakai ever made anything for American Flyer, just speculation by some. Sakai was good at copying other companies designs and graphics. Sakai was produce in Japan. American Flyer Pikemaster components were made in Hong Kong. They were assembled, painted and lettered in the USA. Marx had a factory in Hong Kong during same period that American Flyer produced Pikemaster Trains (1961 thru 1963). Based on the similarities of both lines, it is my opinion that American Flyer contracted with Marx to produced the Pikemaster components.

More blue for U. The Marx like Wabash cattle-car 33009 sold by Gilbert. The Wabash caboose is also a Marx-like car built by Gilbert #33620. They look like they were made by Marx for Gilbert. But are entirely Gilbert.

| Marx never produced a cattle car or bay window caboose with a cupola in HO. To say that Marx made or built Gilbert HO rolling stock would be a misstatement. Marx may have produced some components that Gilbert used in their HO line. Gilbert HO locomotives and cars were assembled and decorated at their plant in New Haven Connecticut.

Well, that's Gilbert's problem being identified, isn't it? Only Marx had the split frame truck with large metal pivot pin. With no other ID on the car, it's only natural to "assume" that it's a Marx, whether it is or not. Glad there are informed and experienced members who can tell that it isn't. Model Power has the rights to the chassis's now, I bought some trucks from them a few years ago to fix some original Marx cars that were missing the trucks when I bought a new Model Power car and discovered the Marx trucks under it . Perfect fit! I guess they'll work on some Gilbert chassis's as well.

One way to tell the difference between Marx and Gilbert rolling stock is, Marx used brass pivot pins and Gilbert used steel or aluminum pivot pins.

Gilbert, like Lionel, had others make a lot of their HO items (Varney, primarily at first); I presumed that the Marx-like cars were made by Marx for Gilbert, but I suppose it's equally possible that like so many other older HO items, Gilbert copied Marx's pieces for their line.
In any case, yes, the dies lay dormant for many. many years then Model Power dusted them off and updated them a bit.
