SCVR66,

If you own this poster-page, you've got quite a gem as it is. I don't think Conrail has ever been endorsed with a steam locomotive. That's like selling a stereo in the early 1800's. The steam existed, the electricity started to spread, but Conrail and steam locomotives? No.

I own a Duluth South Shore & Atlantic (DSSA) Athearn GP9 done up in grey with red lettering, brass front pilot/plow, brass winterized dynamic brake housing, actual eye-lift rings, all the M-U hosing(properly painted red with yellow tips), M-U outlets, brass bell and brake-stand and wheel, jewel marker lights, brass 3-chime horns, #3600 in all number boards and cab sides... the whole nine yards of details...
I bought it for a shocking price of $20, way up and west Vernon, BC, Canada...

I searched and researched...

The DSSA owned Baldwins, with which the Soo Line was disappointed with when they acquired the DSSA. "Why?" You may ask. The DSSA owned NO GM/EMD locomotives. What this means to me is as much as is my owning a Pennsy DD40 by Athearn.
1. Pennsy, B&O, Burlington, what else was it painted for besides the Demonstrator scheme?
2. EMD never made an actual DD40.
Like the little Athearn Hustler, the DD40 never existed.
Real DD35's/DD35A's, yes.

All this mumbo-jumbo I'm contributing, and what am I trying to say? Sorta drilling out a hole in the Conrail steamer.

While it may be useless information, it's good to know.

You acquiring one of these locomotives is almost as rare as finding one in pristine condition.

But, go with your heart! Having model trains is a passion that doesn't rot your liver or heart, but it may have the same effect on your wallet as it does with an alcoholic in a liquor store.

By all means, have fun collecting trains! Someone's trash trains can be your tinkering treasures.
It's been that way for me since 1978.

John

My dad has one of these posters, in worse shape, this is a photo replica but doesn't matter. Anyways I know conrail didn't have steam but I lOve having rare engines especially mantua, I'm dying to get many engines that are on eBay but a conrail steamer is on top, ahm made one and mantua did ive seen many ahms but no mantuas, I didn't know till a month ago mantua made a conrail steamer, I don't plan on it coming easy to find I've foun not a single photo/link about mantuas conrail 0-4-0. Only this poster, I really want the hooker chemical 0-4-0 in this poster, I love my favorite colOr orange so this one I love, still no photos besides this of any of them, the navy 0-6-0 is cool but I really am only trying to find these 2, ironically I found this navy 0-6-0T on eBay last week but like I said I'm not looking for that one, I have many rare HO units (non brass, to expensive) but my favorite rare engine is my mantua 2-6-6-2 w/tender logger cherry valley logging company #25, bought it at my favorite train store, it was part of one guys huge mantua collection and all units were rarish, there was a dixiebell rio grande 4-6-0 a CNJ 2-8-2 camelback and a regular great northern big six 0-6-0. I got hooked on the 2-6-6-2 cause of it's look and performance, I found out a day later that it was rare and hard to find. I have a special site that shows u all eBay auctions of a certain item even if it was sold 5 yearsago, I typed in mantua Cherry galley logging etc... And saw that only two have been sold on eBay one last year and 1 in 2010, could there be more maybe but I like the feeling of having an engine that only a few people have. I have almost 100 engines in my collection which each run on my layout periodically, but the diesels are basically regular athearns and a few others while the 20 steamers are like each different manufacture mantua, Ihc, roundhouse etc. Some are common others are not I don't buy from one manufactur I buy them all so that the possiblities are endless, my older brother never understands why I buy steamers but don't run them alot, I tell him it's not about runningthe train it's about having it. Sorry if this post is long, I tend to ramble when I talk about my favorite object/hobby, thank you :)

yes...rambling on about model trains, when I post most of my inputs here, I ramble on and on. Usually more of an answer than the inquirer asks for.

But, that's "Passion" with these ramblings. It's a good thing. I wanna feed it continuously.

And yes, a Conrail steam locomotive is not a natural being. Owning one is a desire shared by many. Like my DSSA GP9, a guy told me: "Keep it for posterity!" A trophy! Athearn Hustlers, hey, the TYCO Turbo-Train! "My train goes faster than yours! And it has a jump and loop-de-loop, to boot!"

Now you know why this forum exists.
Ask, and it shall be given you... or anything worth believing!
Have Fun!
Forward, March!

SO far, in my train show wanderings, I have not seen any Conrail steam engines. But you never know...and there's another show this weekend about 30 miles from me,so I"m going on Saturday. I'll look. But, of course, I GET the first one I find, the 2nd is up for sale.

Lost Ark found..... I picked this off of Ebay a couple of days ago, for $10.50.

It appears to be NIB. I saw, bid on and was out bid for the US Navy 0-6-0 Switcher, pictured in the ad above. That sold for close to $60. I have never seen the Hooker Steam Engine pictured. One of my Tyco collector friends said he has/had a Ford Mantua Shifter II 0-4-0.

I doubt you would have won anyway as I bid $63.50 for it..... I like NJ Transit, Metro North and Conrail..... What was your top bid going to be??? I wanted it also.....

I have done things like that before.... Like falling asleep 10 mins before an auctions end and missing it.

The US Navy 0-6-0, I have never seen before the ad was posted.

No intent to rub it in your face..... Just posting a close up pic for everyone. It is sort of ironic this thread appears then the engine shows up on Ebay...

Justin, when I see my friend I will ask him if he still has it. If he does, maybe I could get a pic for everyone here.

Your not at all, just makes me regret not getting to it in time. I didn't say a word about me finding this listing just in case someone tried to bid against me but it is very ironic that within not even a week of this post it came up on eBay clearly the seller had no idea the rareness of this engine. Well I got a mantua big six 0-6-0 shifter on it's way from Pennsylvania to my house in California. Can't wait to get it and see how it is, I kept that a secret bid to, to my surprise absolutely no one challenged me for it on eBay, it was only $10 and stated to be in running condition, I will clean the wheels and lube it to be sure. I don't tell anyone about the things I bid at least on this site because I don't need anymOre birders against me. I usualy only get 1-2 engines a month from eBay, I look for mantuas or any medium sized engine between a small 0-4-0 to a good 2-8-2. Just kinda rambling on right now...
